1. Adam Mathyson.  Device Resubmission.  Gules, a bend sinister sable fimbriated, in chief a bear pawprint argent.

(Caer Galen)  Submitter's name submitted to Laurel on the October 31, 2008 LoR (http://rampart.outlandsheralds.org/2008-09-lop/0810-lor.html) of the Outlands.  Submitter's previous device, Gules, a bend sable fimbriated, in chief a bear pawprint argent, was returned on the same letter, stating "Returned for conflict with Trinidad and Tobago, Gules, a bend sable fimbriated argent. There is only one CD for the addition of the secondary pawprint."

The device has been re-drawn with a bend sinister to clear the conflict.

2.  Al Ulaghan Chinua. Name and Device resubmission. Sable, on a fess argent between a scimitar fesswise reversed and a scimitar fesswise proper, a wolf courant gules.

(Caerthe)  Gender: Male.  Submitter cares most about the meaning of the name.  Submitter will not accept major changes to the name

Submitter's previous name submission, Thak Al Chinua was returned on the April 2008 LoR from the Outlands (http://rampart.outlandsheralds.org/2008-03-lop/0804-lor.html), stating: "The documentation provided by the client was insufficent to prove that the element "Thak" was used as a part of a name. Commentary indicates that there are more knowledgable sources on Mongolian names, and I would like to see documentation from them before sending this to the College of Arms. Please contact Mistress Marta in Atenveldt, and she should be able to provide documentation, and sources to support this name element. The device, while clear of conflict, is returned for the lack of a name to associate with it." Submitter has changed the name and included new documentation with it:

All documentation from "Researching Mongol Names in the SCA" by Luigi Kapaj found at http://silverhorde.viahistoria.com/main.html?research/ResearchingMongolNames.html

Name Form: The name follows the form [Adjective + Adjective + Noun] as defined in the section "What Can Be Done." The examples use a base noun translating to [puppy] for the given name.

[Al Ulaghan]: Given as an example of an [Adjective + Adjective] form in the section "What Can Be Done" meaning [Crimson Red]: <adjective + adjective + noun> /Al Ulaghan Gülüg/ (Crimson Red Puppy)

[Chinua]: Given as an example of a noun based name meaning [wolf] described in the section "College of Arms precedents."

Submitter has re-submitted the device unchanged as it was returned for a lack of a name to associate it with as noted above..

3.  Alverkes Czypser.  New Name and Device.  Per bend sinister argent and sable, a fox courant per bend sinister gules and argent.

(Caerthe)  Gender: Male.  Submitter cares most about the sound of the name.  Changes accepted.

[Alverkes] - German Names, Hans Bahlow (tr. Edda Gentry), 2nd Edition, header [Elvers] lists Alverkes as a personal name dated to 1415 in Kiel.

[Czypser] - Bahlow, ibid, header [Zips, Zipser] dates Czypser to 1402 and 1475.

4.  Branwen ferch Gruffudd Rhodri.  Device Resubmission. Sable, a vol and on a bordure gules fimbriated nine lillies argent.

(Caerthe) Submitter's name was registered on the July 2005 LoAR (http://heraldry.sca.org/heraldry/loar/2005/07/05-07lar.html) via the Outlands. Submitter's original device submission, Gules, on a pale between two vols argent, three chaplets of four arum lilies sable, was returned on the same LoAR.

Submitter's second device submission, Sable, a vol argent and a bordure argent semy of arum lilies gules, was returned by Laurel on the April 2009 LoAR (http://heraldry.sca.org/loar/2009/04/09-04lar.html), stating: "This is returned for lack of identifiability. The arum lilies on the bordure are not recognizable. Various commenters thought they were either screws or other items."  Submitter has changed the colors of the bordure and the lilies, and re-drawn the lilies to make them more identifiable.

5.  Carola von Naumburg. New Badge.  (Fieldless) on a tower gules, a griffon head Or..

(Citadel)  Submitter's name was sent to Laurel on the Outlands' April 2009 LoR (http://rampart.outlandsheralds.org/2009-03-lop/0904-lor.html).

6.  Celestina Santi. Name and Device Resubmission. Per pall Azure, purpure, and gules, a greyhound sejant proper.

(Caerthe) Gender: Female.  Changes Accepted.

Submitter's previous submission, Celestina Sarti, Per pale azure and gules, two Spanish Moon moths bendwise marked gules and a cat rampant, all within a tressure Or , was returned by Kingdom on the May 2007 LoR (http://rampart.outlandsheralds.org/2007-04-lop/0705-lor.html), stating:

The submission included copies of St. Gabriel reports, but no direct references to source materials. The College of Arms has long had a policy of requiring specific name and date citations regarding submitted names. Using the references in a St. Gabriel report is an excellent way to begin research into a name, but the St. Gabriel report is not considered sufficient documentation in and of itself. In reviewing the cited sources from the reports I could not confirm the information provided. The documentation for [Celestina] is a reference to a webpage http://www.sardimpex.com/ which is in Italian, and I was unable to find the reference within the site for dating [Celestina]. The reference for the name [Sarti] is the _Dizionario dei nomi Italiani_ by De Felice. In cross referencing the citation by the St. Gabriel report, I can only find a reference to [Sarti] in the 1978 version, and not the 1992 printing. In either case I am unsure of the dating of the name, as I cannot read Italian.
Name returned for lack of documentation.

Commenters indicate that [Spanish moon moths] are a new charge to SCA heraldry. Per Rfs.VII.1 - Period Charges - and Rfs.VII.4 - Period Flora and Fauna - only period charges and fauna known in period may be used in SCA armory. Documentation showing that [Spanish moon moths] were a species known in period and used in period heraldry is required for them to be used in SCA armory. This issue could be sidestepped by simply blazoning these as [moths].
Commenters also indicate that the tressure is a diminutive of the orle, and is always used in groups (i.e. double tressure, triple tressure, etc). Diminutives such as tressures, bendlets, coitices, etc, can not be used as single elements in Society heraldry. This should be redrawn as an orle, growing its width.
Device returned for lack of name, lack of charge documentation, and general redraw.

Submitter has completely redesigned the device and submitted additional documentation for the name.

[Celestina] - St. Gabriel Report 3138 (http://www.panix.com/~gabriel/public-bin/showfinal.cgi/3138.txt) states that Celestina is an Italian given name from about 1500.  Also, "Feminine Given Names from Kent, 1302-1363 " by AElfwyn aet Gyrwum (Jodi McMaster) (http://www.s-gabriel.org/names/aelfwyn/kentfemnames.html) shows Celestina was used in 1349-1350.

[Santi] - "Family Names Appearing in the Catasto of 1427 " (http://www.s-gabriel.org/names/ferrante/catasto/family_names.html) shows one instance of Santi.

7.  James Maccorquodill. New Device. Or, in chevron three cross crosslets gules, on a chief gules a rose argent.

(Ravenhyrst) Submitter's name was registered on the February 1999 LoAR (http://heraldry.sca.org/heraldry/loar/1999/02/lar.html) via the Middle.

The same LoAR noted a return of a device submission, Argent, issuant from a torse nowed five times Or and gules, a demi-stag gules , stating "This is being returned for lack of mini-emblazon on the LoI, and no paperwork for the armory".  Submitter is treating this a new, rather than resubmission.

8.  Magge Magnus.  Device Resubmission.  Purpure, on a bend between two hummingbirds hovering argent three butterflies bend-sinisterwise purpure.

(Caerthe) Submitter's name was registered on the February 2009 LoAR (http://heraldry.sca.org/heraldry/loar/2009/02/09-02lar.html) via the Outlands.

Submitter's previous device, Purpure, on a bend or three butterflies bend-sinisterwise purpure, between two hummingbirds reversed Or , was returned by Kingdom on the October 2008 LoR (http://rampart.outlandsheralds.org/2008-09-lop/0810-lor.html), stating "Returned for redraw; all of the elements were much too small to be identified as such. With a wider bend, there would be more room for the butterflies; finally, the charges indicated to be hummingbirds were not easily identified as such, and would best be redefined as just 'birds'."

Submitter has re-drawn the device and changed tinctures to make all the elements more identifiable.

9.  Myhell Ruadh. Device Resubmission. Barry azure and argent, a shark urinant Or, on a chief wavy argent three herrings haurient sinister gules.

(Citadel)  Submitter's name was registered on the July 2007 LoAR (http://heraldry.sca.org/heraldry/loar/2007/07/07-07lar.html) via the Outlands.

Submitter's previous device, Barry of eight azure and argent, a shark urinant Or, on a chief wavy argent three herrings hauriant gules, was returned by Kingdom on the March 2007 LoR (http://rampart.outlandsheralds.org/2007-02-lop/0703-lor.html), stating "Commenters indicate that the chief is too low into the field, and the bars appear to be somewhat wavy. The number of bars should not be indicated and they should either be drawn straight or drawn and blazoned wavy (like the chief). The bars can only be wavy if they do not share any tincture with the chief. This could be redrawn as plain barry with the current tinctures or simply as barry wavy azure and argent, and put the herrings in chief. As blazoned (requiring the redraw of the bars) the device appears clear of conflict. "

Submitter has re-drawn the bars as requested.

10.  Ótama in glađa.  Device Resubmission. Purpure, in pale a flame proper and a dragonfly, a chief rayonny Or.

(Caerthe)  Submitter's name was registered on the August 2008 LoAR (http://heraldry.sca.org/heraldry/loar/2008/08/08-08lar.html) via the Outlands.

Submitter's previous device, Purpure, in pale a flame proper and a dragonfly, a chief rayonny Or,  was returned by Kingdom on the April 2008 LoR (http://rampart.outlandsheralds.org/2008-03-lop/0804-lor.html), stating "The client is urged to draw their chief thicker, and with fewer and deeper rayons, Please resubmit."

Submitter has drawn the chief larger, with deeper rayons, as requested.

11.  Rivkah ha Cantor bat Benjamine.  New Name and Device. Gules a fillet Or, a black wolf sejant head erect proper and in chief three shofars Or.

(Unser Hafen) Gender: Female.  Submitter cares most about the language/culture of the name, defined as "Spanish Jew".  Changes Accepted.

[Rivkah] - "Jewish Women's Names in an Arab Context: Names from the Geniza of Cairo" by Juliana de Luna (Julia Smith) (http://heraldry.sca.org/heraldry/laurel/names/geniza.html) lists Rivkah as a form of Rebekah dating to biblical times.

[ha Cantor] - submitter asserts the translation of this phrase is "the" (Hebrew) "Singer" (Spanish).  the use of the Spanish byname is justified by "Jewish Women's Names in an Arab Context: Names from the Geniza of Cairo" by Juliana de Luna (Julia Smith) (http://heraldry.sca.org/heraldry/laurel/names/geniza.html), and the use of "ha" from the Hebrew instead of "al" from the Arabic is justified by The Complete Anachronist #110, p. 42.

[Bat Benjamine] - The Complete Anachronist #110 p. 42-23, the use of "bat" instead of "bas" from The Jewish Tapestry, Steven M. Lowenstein, p. 52-53.

12.  Robert Magnus. Device Resubmission. Or, a raptor's foot gules and on a base sable a mullet of eight points Or.

(Caerthe) Submitter's name was registered on the August 2007 LoAR (http://heraldry.sca.org/heraldry/loar/2007/08/07-08lar.html) via the Outlands.

Submitter's previous device, Or, a raptor's foot couped gules, taloned sable, a chief dovetailed and on a champagne sable a mullet of four greater and four lesser points Or , was returned by Kingdom on the October 2008 LoR (http://rampart.outlandsheralds.org/2008-09-lop/0810-lor.html), stating "Returned for Redraw; this does not show a very good depiction of 'dovetailed', as the traits are not evenly spaced or matched in size. Additionally, the charge 'champagne' has never been registered before. In Fox-Davies' "A Complete Guide to Heraldry", it says "In foreign heraldry the base of the quartered shield is not infrequently cut off by a horizontal line, forming what is known as a Champagne, and the space thus made is occupied by one or more coats." As this charge has a curved top, this does not support the use of the charge, nor does the documentation date the charge ."

Submitter has redesigned the device to remove these problems.

13.  Rónán Suipeal.  New Name and Device. Quarterly Sable and Vert, a dragon rampant argent.

(Caerthe) Gender: Male. Submitter cares most about the sound and language/culture of the name, defined as "Late 12th/Early 13th C Irish (Normanized). Submitter will not accept major changes to the name.

[Rónán] - “100 Most Popular Men's Names in Early Medieval Ireland” by Tangwystyl verch Morgant Glasvryn (Heather Rose Jones)” (http://heraldry.sca.org/heraldry/laurel/names/irish100.html) lists 47 occurrences of Rónán.  Also, "index of Names in Irish Annals: Rónán" by Kathleen M. O'Brien (http://www.medievalscotland.org/kmo/AnnalsIndex/Masculine/Ronan.shtml) shows 35 occurrences dating to 590-1117.

[Suipeal] - The Surnames of Ireland, Mac Lysaght, Barnes & Noble 1969, p.204 and More Irish Families, Mac Lysaght, Irish Academic Press 1996, p. 197.

14. Thorir kyrsbani. Device Resubmission. Per bend sinsiter argent and sable all crusilly latin bottony counterchanged on a bend gules three roses argent.

(Windkeep)  Submitter's name was registered on the July 2005 LoAR (http://heraldry.sca.org/heraldry/loar/2005/06/05-06lar.html) via Artemesia.

Submitter's previous device, Per bend sinister argent and sable all crusilly Latin bottony counterchanged, on a bend sinister gules three Tudor roses , was returned by Laurel on the same LoAR, stating "For a number of reasons, this is returned for a redraw. First, and most importantly, is that this particular emblazon has the appearance of using Tudor roses. Tudor roses, defined as "The combination of a rose argent and a rose gules, whether as a double rose or in some other manner which creates a half-white, half-red rose", are restricted because of their association with the Tudors and cannot be registered. In addition, the sable crosses are conjoined making the charges unidentifiable as crusilly. Note that the crosses should be clearly drawn as bottony or as crosslet."

Submitter has re-drawn the device and replaced the Tudor roses with roses argent.

15.  Tiberius Acilius Brutus. Device Resubmission. Per bend sinister argent and vert, a quiver and a ram's head caboshed counterchanged.

(Dragonsspine)  Submitter's name was registered on the March 2006 LoAR (http://heraldry.sca.org/heraldry/loar/2006/03/06-03lar.html) via the Outlands.

Submitter's previous device, Gules, in fess a natural leopard couchant guardant between two Ionic columns Or, was returned by Laurel on the same LoAR, stating "This is returned for conflict with Randall of Willowrock, Gules, in fess a mullet inverted between two Doric columns argent, reblazoned elsewhere in this letter. There is a CD for changing the tincture of the primary charges, but no difference for changing the type only of one of three charges in fess."

Submitter has completely redesigned the device.

16.  Umamah bint Zayd al-Andalusiyyah. Device Resubmission.  Argent, a Hungerford knot tassled sable, enfiling in fess an arm embowed and an arm counterembowed gules.

(Citadel)  Submitter's name was registered on the July 2007 LoAR (http://heraldry.sca.org/heraldry/loar/2007/07/07-07lar.html) via the Outlands.

Submitter's previous device, Argent, a Hungerford knot tasseled sable supported by two arms embowed counter-embowed gules , was returned by Kingdom on the March 2007 LoR (http://rampart.outlandsheralds.org/2007-02-lop/0703-lor.html), stating

Commenters indicate that the blazon and the emblazon does not match. The emblazon could not be recreated from the blazon, but commenters could not provide any suggested blazon that would allow the emblazon to be recreated. The blazon would have the two arms holding the knot at the fess points, not entwined within the knot itself.

This violates Rfs VII.7.b - Reconstruction Requirement - which states that the device must be reproducible by a competent herald from the blazon.

Device returned for violation for violation of Rfs VII.7.b

Submitter has provided a new blazon better describing the device.

17.  Violetta Villani. New Name.

(al-Barran)  Gender: Female. Submitter cares most about the sound of the name, noted as "Vi-o-letta Vi-ll-ani".  Submitter will not accept major changes to the name.

[Violetta] - "Names of Jews in Rome in the 1550s Table of Names" by Yehoshua ben Haimha Yerushalmu (http://www.s-gabriel.org/names/yehoshua/rome_article.html)

[Villani] - "Family Names Appearing in the Catasto of 1427 " (http://www.s-gabriel.org/names/ferrante/catasto/family_names.html

18.  Wolfgang der Imker vom Schwarzwald. New Name and Device.  Per chevron sable and Or, two bees volant an a fir tree counterchanged.

(Hawk's Hollow)  Gender:Male.  Submitter cares most about the meaning of the name, defined as "Wolfgang the beekeeper of the Black Forest".  Submitter requests authenticity for 16th C. Germany (Schwaben).

[Wolfgang] - "Late Period German Masculine Given Names" by Talan Gwynek (http://heraldry.sca.org/heraldry/laurel/names/germmasc.html) dates the name to 1501-1550.

[der Imker] - "the Beekeeper" - Oxford German Dictionary p. 120

[vom Schwarzwald] - "from the Black Forest' - Oxford German Dictionary, p. 203 header "schwarz".
