1. al-Barran, Barony of. Name
and badge resubmission for the Order
of the Hammer of al-Barran. Fieldless,
a hammer of Thor argent.
(al-Barran)
The original submission, Order of the
Hammer, was returned on the December
2006 Letter of Acceptances and Returns: "This name conflicts with Hammer
Pursuivant, registered to Meridies in April 1981. The descriptive
elements are identical and the designators do not count for difference.
We note that, if the Barony had a letter of permission to conflict from
Meridies, the name Order of the Hammer of al-Barran would be
registerable; although the addition of the group name would not clear
the conflict, it would provide sufficient difference for such a letter
to allow registration." The resubmission modifies the order name as
recommended by Laurel. In addition, a letter of permission to conflict
is included, signed by the King and Queen of Meridies.
I cannot find a previous submission of the badge.
2. Alrik Boleslavsson. New
name and device. Per chevron, sable
and argent, two lions rampant combattant and a tree blasted and
eradicated counterchanged.
(al-Barran) Gender: Male.
The submitter cares most about the language/culture of the name, and
requests a name authentic for 9th Century Rus Viking. Changes accepted.
Alrik: dated to 800, Alrik, son of King Eirik of Uppsala, king of
Vastergotland in Sweden. Unfortunately, all that is included from this
source is a single photocopy. The source of this photocopy is not
identified. A quote from a previous submission from another Kingdom,
included in the submitter's packet: "'Alrik' is found on pp. 79 and 446
of A History of the Vikings by Gwyn Jones and cited as a king in
Vastergotland, named on a runic stone, Saprlosa. 'Alric' is found in
Reaney, 1976, p. 4, under the heading 'Aldrich' and is cited as being
Old English circa 1066. We also find 'Alric' in Searle, 1969, p. 7
dated to 693." Can anyone help solidify this documentation?
Boleslavsson: Mike Campbell, Behind
the Name: the Etymology and History of First Names (http://www.behindthename.com/nmc/rus.php)
lists Boleslav as a Russian form of the Polish name Bolesław. Bolesław
was the first King of Poland. A
Dictionary of Period Russian Names by Paul Wickenden of Thanet (http://www.sca.org/heraldry/paul/bl.html)
cites Boleslav, ecclesiastical staff of Prince Vsevolod, dated to 1569.
The formation "-sson" is documented by analogy to the surname
Ragnarsson
- Academy of St. Gabriel report 1520 (http://www.panix.com/~gabriel/public-bin/showfinal.cgi?1520+0)
The compatibility of the Swedish and Russian cultures of the two names
is addressed in What Life
Was Like When Longships Sailed: Vikings AD 800-1100, Time-Life
Book Series, p. 78-80. No photocopies were included, but fortunately I
own a copy of this book. The cited section tells the story of
Harald Hardradi, who was exiled from Norway at the age of 15 after the
death of his brother, King (Saint) Olaf, and fled to Sweden. He linked
up with other exiles in Sweden and offered his and his men's services
to Yaroslav the Wise, Price of Kiev and descendant of the old Swedish
rulers of Kiev.
3. Ansteys Darcy. Name and
device resubmission. Gules, a
chevron ermine cotised Or and in base a rose argent, barbed and seeded
sable.
(Caerthe) Gender: Female.
The submitter cares most about both the sound ("Ahnstiss") and the
language/culture (English, no date specified) of the name. Changes
accepted.
The previously submitted name and device, Anastasia
Vladimirovicha Alzhbetina, Gules, a chevron ermine
cotised Or and in base a rose argent barbed and seeded sable, were
returned on the December
2005 Letter of Response. The device was returned for lack
of a name with which to submit it, with these comments: "Commenters
indicate that the device appears to be clear of conflict. The client
should draw the cotises wider on resubmission, as these charges are
close to being too thin to identify (which can itself be a reason for
return)."
Ansteys: Reaney & Wilson, A
Dictionary of English Surnames, under the header Anastasia,
dated to 1221.
Darcy: Reaney & Wilson, A
Dictionary of English Surnames, dated to 1273 and 1276.
4. Ansteys Darcy. Badge
resubmission. (Fieldless) A rose
argent, barbed and seeded sable, conjoined to an annulet Or.
(Caerthe)
The previous submission, Fieldless a double rose argent barbed of
ermine spots and seeded sable, was returned on the December
2005 Letter of Response for lack of a name with which to submit it,
and for multiple conflicts: "Conflicts with An Tir, Kingdom of,
registered August of 1979 for the Order of the Silver Rose: (Fieldless)
A rose argent, barbed and seeded, slipped and leaved, proper. One
CD for fieldlessness only. Conflicts with York, House of, registered in
December of 1994 as important non-SCA badge: (Fieldless) A rose

Alisdair Padruig Seamus Andrea Stilbhard MacMhurich de Rannocha,

6. Kieran Blake. Badge

fleur-de-lysé per saltire argent and azure.
(Citadel of the Southern Pass)
The name was registered in February
2005. The previous submission, (Fieldless) A masculyn argent,
was returned on the May
2006 Letter of Response for conflict: "Conflict with Teceangl Bach,
registered December of 2000: (Fieldless) A mascle argent. One
CD for Fieldlessness."
7. Slaine inghean Ui Sheanain. Device
resubmission. Quarterly sable and
argent, a thistle counterchanged.
(al-Barran)
The name was registered in September
2002. I am unable to locate the return of the previous
submission.
8. Sorcha inghean Eoin. Name
and device resubmission. Ermine, a
water bouget azure within a bordure raguly vert.
(Citadel of the Southern Pass) Gender: Female. The submitter
cares most about the language/culture of the name, defined as 14th
Century Scottish. Changes accepted.
The previous submission, Sorcha
inghean Eion, was returned on the April
2007 Letter of Response for lack of included documentation. This
has now been provided, and a typographical error in the surname has
been corrected.
Sorcha: Academy of St. Gabriel report 1203 (http://www.panix.com/~gabriel/public-bin/showfinal.cgi/1203.txt)
states that this name was fairly common in medieval Ireland.
inghean: "Quick and Easy Gaelic Bynames (http://www.medievalscotland.org/scotnames/quickgaelicbynames/)
- "daughter of <father's name>"
Eoin: Kross, Sharon L. "Scottish Gaelic Given Names - Men" (http://www.medievalscotland.org/scotnames/gaelicgiven/men/eoin.shtml):

<x> MacDomhnaill".
9. Thorstienn Vandringsmann. Device
resubmission. Sable, on a cross nowy
argent an Elder futhark rune Manaz sable, all within a bordure argent.
(Dragonsspine)
The name was registered in September 1995.
The previous submission, Sable, a cross nowy argent surmounted by
an elder futhark rune mannaz sable, was returned on the May
2007 Letter of Response for multiple conflicts and an
unregisterable charge: "Commenters also indicate that per the January
1987 and September 1986 LoARs, runes are not allowed in a device (and
are suggested for badges). Also per the January 1990 LoAR, if the
Mannaz can be shown to have been used in period heraldry it could
possibly be registered." The submitter includes an eight-page rebuttal
of the concept that runes are unregisterable. I am not about to retype
it here. If desired, I can scan it and send it to the List.
10. Tristan de Gilbert. Device
resubmission. Argent, a palm tree
couped sable and in base between two vols, on a point entee fleury
gules, a vol argent.
(Citadel of the Southern Pass)
The name was registered in August
2004. On the same Letter
of Acceptances and Returns the device submission, Argent, a palm tree couped sable and two
vols, on a point pointed fleury gules a vol argent, was
returned for a redraw: "The point pointed is too large, issuing from
too
high up the sides of the shield. Note that of the various devices with
which the submitter has permission to conflict, the two for which we
could get emblazons have points that are significantly smaller. The
submitter has permission to conflict with Berold de Gilbert, Argent,
a palm tree couped
sable and in base between two Latin crosses fourchy, on a point entee
fleury gules, a Latin cross fourchy argent, and with Roger de
Gilbert, Argent, a palm tree couped sable and two roses proper one
and two, on a point pointed fleury gules a rose argent barbed and
seeded proper; it is one CD away from the device (Argent, a palm
tree couped sable between in base two fleurs-de-lys, on a point pointed
flory at the point gules, a fleur-de-lys argent) of Philippe de
Gilbert, whose blanket letter of permission to conflict likewise
appears earlier in this letter." Copies of the letters of permission to
conflict from Berold de Gilbert and Roger de Gilbert are included with
this resubmission.
11. Walkelin Montgomery. New
name and device. Argent, a
Japanese arrow notch inverted and in chief two chevronels couped
braced, a bordure sable.
(Drygestan) Gender: Male.
Submitter cares most about the sound of the name. No changes accepted.
Note: the submitter intends the device to be a Japanese mon.
