Unto Marie de Blois, White Stag Principal Herald and the Outlands College of Heralds, does Æðeluulf Munec, Rampart Herald, send thoughts of health and prosperity in these harvest months. I write you this day concerning the October Letter of Response for the Kingdom of the Outlands. The following items have been sent to Laurel for final determination:

  1. al-Barran, Barony of Order of the Hammer of al-Barran - Resubmission of Order Name; The branch name was registered "at some point"; See RETURNS for the badge.
  2. Alrekr Boleslavov - Name & Device; Per chevron sable and argent, two lions combattant and a tree blasted and eradicated counterchanged.
Originally submitted as [Alrik Boleslavsson], the surname was changed for linguistic compatibility, and the given name was changed for a documented spelling. Additionally, the blazon was changed from "Per chevron, sable and argent, two lions rampant combattant and a tree blasted and eradicated counterchanged."
  3. Ansteys Darcy - Name & Device; Gules, a chevron ermine cotised Or and in base a rose argent, barbed and seeded sable. See RETURNS for Badge.
  4. Broddi Hornabrjótr - Name; See RETURNS for Device
  5. Kieran Blake - Badge; (Fieldless), a masculyn fleur-de-lysé per saltire argent and azure. The associated name was registered in February 2005
  6. Slaine inghean Ui Sheanain - Device; Quarterly sable and argent, a thistle counterchanged. The associated name was registered in September 2002
  7. Sorcha inghean Eoin - Name; See RETURNS for Device
  8. Thorsteinn Vandringsmann - Device; Sable, on a cross nowy argent an Elder futhark rune Manaz sable, all within a bordure argent. The associated name was registered in September 1995.
  9. Tristan de Gilbert - Device; Argent, a palm tree couped sable and in base between two vols, on a point entee fleury gules, a vol argent. The associated name was regsitered in August 2004.
  10. Walkelin Montgomery - Name; See RETURNS for the device.

The following items were returned for rework:

  1. al-Barran, Barony of - Fieldless, a Thor's Hammer argent The name associated with this submission was returned in December 2006, and did not have accompanying armory at that time. Unfortunately, this item is returned for multiple conflicts (both items have only one CD for fieldlessness): Bonifacius Finngall - Per chevron gules and sable, in base a Thor's hammer argent. Galen Brouwer - Purpure, a Thor's hammer argent.
  2. Ansteys Darcy - (Fieldless) A rose argent, barbed and seeded sable, conjoined to an annulet Or. The badge is returned for conflict with the following: Julia of Candleshoe- Vert, a hawthorne blossom argent within an annulet Or. 1 CD for change of field (fieldlessness). Hawthorne flowers are indistinguishable from cinqfoils, and cinqfoils conflict with roses.
  3. Broddi Hornabrjótr - Per fess dancetty vert and sable, overall two bear paws argent.. This device is returned for redraw. The line division is too deep to be considered "dancetty", and the bear-paws are not drawn in a heraldic style. The client is urged to either deepen the division and make it "pily", or make the division more shallow, and continue with "dancetty". As for the bear paws, the client is urgred to draw them like the paws in the Pictorial Dictionary or the Pennsic Traceable Art sheets.
  4. Sorcha inghean Eoin - Ermine, a water bouget azure within a bordure raguly vert The device is returned for redraw, but is free from conflict. At issue is the depth of the indentations on the bordure, and the thickness of the bordure in general. Commenters indicated that the bordure was difficult to tell between embattled and raguly. Submitter is requested to draw the bordure thicker.
  5. Walkelin Montgomery - Argent, a Japanese arrow notch inverted and in chief two chevronels couped braced, a bordure sable.. Rampart was unable to find any precedent for the use of the fletching or nocks of an arrow as a heraldic charge, and in fact found many returned devices attempting to register the rear-half of arrows. I will cite RfS VIII.3 (Armorial Identifiability; as a "demi-arrow" is generally the head of the item, aka Pheon, and we have no term for the rear of an arrow which includes the shaft) in this return, and If the submitter can present period Mon that use the item as a charge in Japanese heraldry, that might present enough information to base a successful challenge of this decision at a Laurel level.

This ends the October Letter of Response, dated this 31st day of October in the year of grace 2007, being the forty-second year of the society, on All Hallow's Eve. I remain in service to Crown and Laurel Sovereign.
