September 2, 2011 From the Office of the Castle Herald
Sayyidah Khalidah bint Yahya'a
castle@outlandsheralds.org

Unto the Outlands College of Heralds, our respected friends and colleagues who give freely of their time to provide commentary, and all others who come by these letters, on this 2nd day of September, A.S. XLV (2011 CE), does Sayyidah Khalidah bint Yahya'a send greetings on behalf of Sheik Omar Mohammud Mirzazadeh, White Stag Principal Herald.  We would like to thank pens for their ability to grant wishes and shatter dreams.

It would assist Castle Herald greatly in the future if you would e-mail a copy of the documentation summary for name submissions along with the paper copies.  It saves having to re-type everything again.  Also, please be sure that you include dates of registration and return for armory for previously registered names and resubmissions of any kind.  If Castle can't find where an item was returned, it may be pended until the information is provided or payment is made for a new submission.

Here follows the Kingdom of the Outlands Letter of Presentation for September 2011. Your comments and suggestions are always welcome. Errors found herein are my sole responsibility.  Anyone may comment upon the items found herein, and e-mail commentary to the herald's commentary list is encouraged. Please have comments on items contained herein to Rampart Herald by October 15, 2011, for the decision meeting tentatively scheduled for October 19, 2011.  As a reminder, the College of Arms requests commentary on all items, including appeals.

Submitter's name was returned on the November 2005 LoR (http://rampart.outlandsheralds.org/2005-10-lop/0511-lor.html) stating

"Cugan-Mathair" is found in the genealogical record of the O'Keefe family from an unknown site or publication. "MacElyoth" is found in a genealogical sheet from the McElligott family from an unknown source. The provided documentation for both names does not provide any indication of the dates when these names were used. It has also been noted in Laurel commentary that genealogical sources are not suitable for our purposes within the SCA.

[Oct 04, Jörgen Unruh] As genealogy sources routinely normalize spellings, they are not suitable for documentation of SCA name submissions on their own.I

Commenters also indicated that "Irish Names" by Ó Corrain & Maguire does not have reference to this given name, nor does "Irish Names for Children" by Woulfe. "The Surnames of Ireland" by MacLysaght speculates that FitzElyoth was a transitional name from the Norman FitzElias to the 20th century MacElligott, but does not provide a period date for the form MacElyoth.

Commenters also indicate that Mathair actually means "mother" not "motherless" and is being used as a partical, not unlike ingen (daughter) or bean (wife). This is patently inappropriate for a male name.

Returned for lack of documentation of the name.

Submitter's device was returned, on the same LoR, for lack of name to submit with it.

Submitter changed name and culture to clear the above issues.

11. Otto der Schwarzherz. Name Resubmission (Kingdom).

(al-Barran) Gender: Male. Submitter cares most about the meaning, 'blackhearted'. Submitter will accept changes.

The submitter's original submission, Otto das Shwarze Herz, was returned on the September 2010 LoR (http://rampart.outlandsheralds.org/2010-08-lop/1009-lor.html) with the following:

The Name is RETURNED for improper name construction.  The proper construction of the byname "blackhearted" would be "Schwarzherz", however, because submitter does not accept major changes, this name must be returned.  The Device is RETURNED for lack of a name to send it up with.

Submitter has cleared the issue by resubmitting with the suggested byname construction.

12.Robert Magnus. Device Resubmission (Laurel). Or, a raptor's foot erased gules and on a base sable a mullet of eight points Or.

(Caerthe) Submitter's name was registered on the August 2007 LoAR (http://heraldry.sca.org/loar/2007/08/07-08lar.html) via the Outlands.

Previous device was returned on the February 2010 LoAR (http://heraldry.sca.org/loar/2010/02/10-02lar.html) with the following:

This device is returned for blurring the line between a base and a per fess line of division. A per fess line would divide the field in half, a base would cover at most the lower third of the field. On resubmission, it should be drawn as one or the other.

Submitter has cleared the issue by drawing the resubmission with a shorter division to make it 'a base'.

13.Rónán Sheapallh. Name and Device Resubmission (Kingdom). Quarterly sable and vert, a chevron argent.

(Caerthe) Gender: Male. Submitter cares most about the language/culture, '13th Century Irish'. Submitter will accept changes.

The submitter's name and device were returned on the October 2009 LoR (http://rampart.outlandsheralds.org/2009-09-lop/0910-lor.html) with the following:

The submitter's chosen surname is not adequately documented with dated spellings. Neither of Mac Lysaght's books are acceptable as primary sources (LoAR 07/2007) as they deal with modern and anglicised spellings of names; if the submitter can find a dated spelling of the surname [Suipeal] we will be able to send this forward. The device is returned for conflict with Gyronny Or and azure, a dragon segreant argent (Brychan Tammas, 01/96 East), only one change for the field. Dragons Rampant and Segregant do not differ significantly.

Submitter cleared the device conflict by submitting a device with a different field and charge. Submitter cleared the surname conflict by providing a surname of a different spelling and additional documentation.
