The following items were returned for further work:

  1. Alexander MacAndrew. New Device. Sable, an even armed Celtic Cross, surrounded by three horses coursant argent.

Commenters suggested the following change to the blazon: Sable, an even armed Celtic Cross, surrounded by three horses courant contourniy in annulo argent, to better define the arrangement of the horses.
Conflicts with the device of Karolus Janus (February 2000, via Ansteorra): Sable, a patriarchal cross argent. 1 CD for the addition of secondary charge group.

  2. Alliana Merch Gryffyth. New Device. Per pale embattled Or and azure, two goats salient combatant sable and argent.

Name passed on the December 1989 LoAR.

Commenters indicated that "Combatant" is defined as "rampant respectant." These goats appear to be more in the forceny posture, which has not been allowed for twenty-five years. It would be best to draw them clearly rampant and blazon them as combatant, or to draw them clearly salient and blazon them as salient respectant.
    Device returned for redraw.

  3. Chagatai Burilgi. Change of Device.

Submitter's current registered SCA name is Murchadh Mac Diarmada. A badge for Murchadh's household, Or, a chevron gules overall a legless wyvern displayed, head to sinister, tail nowed sable, was sent to Laurel on the Outlands March 2005 LoI. This badge was registered on the July 2005 LoAR. He would like to have it designated as the DEVICE for his new persona, Chagatai Burulgi.
Other than the note in the LoP, there was no documentation or letter requesting this change submitted. This change requires a signed letter from the client requesting this change. A suggested text of this letter can be provided to the client by the Rampart office if the client wishes. Upon receipt of this letter by the Rampart office the change will be added to the following LoI without the 1 month commenting period, as this is an administrative change. Because of the lack of request letter, this request cannot be included in the current LoI.

  4. Cugan Mathair MacElyoth. New Name and New Device. Per fess argent and vert three clovers counterchanged and a badger proper salient.

Submitter is most interested in the sound of the name. Name means "Hound without a mother and son of Elias". Desired gender is male.
"Cugan-Mathair" is found in the genealogical record of the O'Keefe family from an unknown site or publication.
"MacElyoth" is found in a genealogical sheet from the McElligott family from an unknown source.
The provided documentation for both names does not provide any indication of the dates when these names were used. It has also been noted in Laurel commentary that genealogical sources are not suitable for our purposes within the SCA.

[Oct 04, Jörgen Unruh] As genealogy sources routinely normalize spellings, they are not suitable for documentation of SCA name submissions on their own.I

Commenters also indicated that "Irish Names" by Ó Corrain & Maguire does not have reference to this given name, nor does "Irish Names for Children" by Woulfe. "The Surnames of Ireland" by MacLysaght speculates that FitzElyoth was a transitional name from the Norman FitzElias to the 20th century MacElligott, but does not provide a period date for the form MacElyoth.
Commenters also indicate that Mathair actually means "mother" not "motherless" and is being used as a partical, not unlike ingen (daughter) or bean (wife). This is patently inappropriate for a male name.
Returned for lack of documentation of the name. Device returned for lack of name to submit with it.

  5. Fontaine dans Sable, Barony of. Order Name Resubmission. Order of the Calm Waters.

Submitter will not accept major/minor changes.
Originally submitted as Keepers of the Waters. Returned on November 2003 LoR because "Waters" is not acceptable as a place name.
Project Ordensmanen "adjective + thing" (http://www.sca.org/heraldry/laurel/names/order/)

Commenters state that this name does not meet any of the general meta-patterns as outlined by Pelican in the August 2005 LoAR. This is because, as was stated in the initial return on the November 2003 LoR, "waters" is not an adequate place name. Further, the construction pattern does not follow any established grammatical pattern within period order names. This order name is being returned for rework. Please remember, on resubmission that words in order names must also be documented as used in period.

  6. Fontaine dans Sable, Barony of. Order Name Resubmission. Order of the Palma Aurum.

Submitter will not accept major/minor changes.
Originally submitted as Golden Palm. Returned on December 2004 LoAR due to conflict with the Household of the Golden Palm.
Project Ordensnamen "Color + Thing" (http://www.sca.org/heraldry/laurel/names/order/)

Commeters indicate that this name meets the general meta-pattern of a heraldic charge, as defined by Pelican in the August 2005 LoAR, as a palm tree or an open palm are valid heraldic period charges. The construction pattern is consistent with Order of the Golden Rose (1096) and Order of the Golden Apple (1394).
Commenters also indicate that this name should most likely be entirely in Latin, instead of a Latin English mix. Regardless, the Latin congregation of this name is incorrect, as "Aurum" is the noun form of the word, not the adjective form. It currently translates closely to "Order of the Palm Gold" instead of "Order of the Golden Palm." A more likely proper form would be "Ordo Palma Aurea" for "Order of the Golden Palm." As the submitter does not allow any changes, this must be returned for rework. It is strongly suggested that the submitter consult with a Latin scholar prior to resubmission. Rampart can suggest one within the Kingdom, if the submitter does not have access to one. Please remember on resubmission that words in order names must also be documented as used in period.

  7. Fontaine dans Sable, Barony of. New Order Name. Order of the Sands.

Submitter will not accept major/minor changes.
    Project Ordensnamen "Thing" (http://www.sca.org/heraldry/laurel/names/order/)

Commenters indicate that this name does not meet any of the general meta-patterns as outlined by Pelican in the August 2005 LoAR. This is because "sands" is not a specific place, nor is it a valid heraldic charge. Further, there are no examples of orders named for a general feature (mountains, rocks, trees, etc.) within period practice. This order name is being returned for rework. Please remember on resubmission that words in order names must also be documented as used in period.

  8. Omar al-Wakeel ibn Haroun al-Rumi. Change of holding name.

Holding name Omar of Dragonsspine established on May 2005 LoAR. Original name Omar al-Saqr al-Antaki returned because it contained two isms.
The only major changes the submitter will accept is the removal of the nasab, "ibn Haroun", but will NOT accept the nasab being placed before the laqab and nisba. Submitter will not accept minor changes, cares most about the meaning of the name (Omar the Guardian from Rome, son of Haroun) and desired gender is male.
Omar is the submitter's legal first name, serving as an ism. A photocopy of legal identification has been provided.
al-Wakeel is a constructed laqab, intended to mean "the guardian/the trusted one", inspired by The One Hundred Most Beautiful Names of God by Mustapha al-Muhaddith ibn al-Saqaat. (http://www.s-gabriel.org/names/mustapha/cnamesofgod.html)
ibn Haroun is a one-generation nasab intended to mean "son of Haroun". "Haroun" is found in Period Arabic Names and Naming Practices (2nd ed) by Da'ud ibn Auda (http://www.sca.org/heraldry/laurel/names/arabic-naming2.htm)
al-Rumi is a geographical nisba meaning "of Rome/Constantinople", also found in Period Arabic Names and Naming Practices (2nd ed.) by Da'ud ibn Auda.

Commenters stated that the website from which al-Wakeel derives states that: "What follows is a list of the One Hundred Most Beautiful Name of God, and their English translations." Thus, the form that is being used is one of the 99 Names of Allah, and not a byname. This name is not a legal name under Rfs. VI.2 relating to names claiming powers, which include divine patronymics and epithets peculiarly associated with divinities. A usable form would be `Abd al-Wakeel which is a form of ism, and could not grammatically follow Omar. To make the name grammatically correct, we would have to make two changes, adding ibn and `Abd, resulting in: Omar ibn `Abd al-Wakeel ibn Haroun al-Rumi. This would constitute a major change, which the client has disallowed. Therefore the name is returned for rework.

Thus ends my Letter of Response.

In service and duty,

Furukusu Masahide, Rampart Herald
