Unto Elisabeth de Rossingol, Laurel Queen of Arms, Margaret MacDuibhshithe, Pelican Queen of Arms, Jean Marie Lacroix, Wreath Queen of Arms, and the College of Arms, upon this 27th day of February 2007, A.S. XL, does Furukusu Masahide, Rampart Herald, send greetings.

Unless otherwise noted, submitters accept all changes, desire a name with the common sense gender, and have no requests for authenticity. My deepest gratitude to those who took time to send internal commentary: Caelan MacKinnon (Black Fountain Pursuivant), Cnute, Gwain of Miskbridge (Green Anchor Herald), Ines, Marie de Blois (White Stag), Margaret Hepburn, Meradudd Cethin (Liber Herald), Sorcha MacLeod, and Ursula Georges (Loyall Pursuevant).

It is our intent to register the following items:

  1. Anna de Apperleye. New Name and New Device. Sable, on a chief Or three apples gules slipped vert.

Gender: Female. Submitter cares most about the meaning and sound of the name (related to "apple"). No major changes accepted.
[Anna]: found as a female given name in Talan Gwynek's "Feminine Given Names in A Dictionary of English Surnames" (http://www.s-gabriel.org/names/talan/reaney/reaney.cgi?Ann), documented in the submitted spelling to 1199.
[de Apperleye]: Reaney & Wilson, _A Dictionary of English Surnames_, heading "Apperley". The names are consistent in language, culture, and time.

Commenters indicate that R&W cites [de Apperleye] to c. 1280.

  2. Fontaine dans Sable, Barony of. New Order Name: Order of the Houre Glass.

    No major changes accepted.
This order name follows the pattern of [thing] as defined in Project Ordensnamen (www.sca.org/heraldry/laurel/names/order). This order name also follows the meta pattern [heraldic charge] laid out by Pelican in the August 2005 LoAR.
The entry for [hour-glass] in the OED dates forms with the common meaning to the 16th century. The spelling [houre glass] is dated to 1591.

As a general note: This order/award is intended to be given to newcomers to the SCA that are deemed to display great promise.

Thus ends my Letter of Intent.

In service and duty,

Furukusu Masahide
Rampart Herald
