Outlands College of Heralds

27 January 2007

From the Office of Rampart Herald
Furukusu Masahide (John Newton)
rampart@outlandsheralds.org

Unto Elisabeth de Rossingol, Laurel Queen of Arms, Margaret MacDuibhshithe, Pelican Queen of Arms, Jean Marie Lacroix, Wreath Queen of Arms, and the College of Arms, upon this 27th day of January 2007, A.S. XL, does Furukusu Masahide, Rampart Herald, send greetings.

Unless otherwise noted, submitters accept all changes, desire a name with the common sense gender, and have no requests for authenticity. My deepest gratitude to those who took time to send internal commentary: Cnute, Gwain of Miskbridge (Green Anchor Herald) and the NE Calontir commenting group, and Ursula Georges (Loyall Pursuevant).

It is our intent to register the following items:

  1. Conn mac Eoghain. New Name and New Device. Gyronny argent and azure, a double-headed eagle and in base a stag's head cabossed Or.

Gender: Male. Submitter cares most about the language/culture of the name, specified as Scots/Irish Gaelic, and requests a name authentic for that culture (no time period indicated). Changes accepted.
[Conn]: "Index of Names in Irish Annals" by Mari Elspeth nic Bryan (http://www.s-gabriel.org/names/mari/AnnalsIndex/Masculine/Conn) documents this spelling for Middle Irish Gaelic (900-1200 AD) and Early Modern Irish Gaelic (1200-1700 AD).
[Eoghan]: "Index of Names in Irish Annals" by Mari Elspeth nic Bryan (http://www.s-gabriel.org/names/mari/AnnalsIndex/Masculine/Eogan.shtml) documents this spelling for Middle Irish Gaelic (900-1200 AD) and Early Modern Irish Gaelic (1200-1700 AD), as the genitive form.
Structure: "Historical Name Generator: Sixteenth Century Irish and Scottish Gaelic Names: Irish Gaelic Man with Patronymic Byname" by Sharon L. Krossa (http://www.medievalscotland.org/scotnames/hng16gaelic/irishmanpat.php?given_id=135&byname_id=38&stage=results) creates this name, with the meaning [Conn son of Eoghan].

  2. Delara-yi Shirāzī. New Name.

    Gender: Don't Care. Changes accepted.
The previous submission, [Delara yi Punel], was returned on the September 2006 Letter of Response, for lack of documentation of the byname [yi Punel].
[Delara]: http://www.avesta.org/znames.htm lists Delara as a Zoroastrian name meaning "Adorner of heart; beloved".
[yi Shirāzī]: "Persian Feminine Names from the Safavid period" by Aryanhwy merch Catmael, Ursula Georges, and Galiana de Baiona (http://www.s-gabriel.org/names/ursula/persian.html) lists [Nihānī-yi Shirāzī], dates to the late 15th/early 16th Century.

Commenters indicate that in general the formation of the name is acceptable. While no specific documentation of dates is given by the submitter, commenters provided various sources which will indirectly document the name to period - [Delara] as the name of the mother of Alexander the Great (http://www.hastim.com/iranian_girl_names.html); [Dilįrįi] was apparently used in a translation of the [Shah Nameh] (http://persian.packhum.org/persian/pf?file=06801286&ct=23) which was supposedly completed around 1010 CE. Rampart notes that a copy of this translation is not included, and due to size, Rampart chose to not print out a copy and include. Please refer to the listed website for this source.
Commenters also indicate that [-yi] is defined as an appropriate article for joining a given name which end in a vowel with locative bynames ("Persian Feminine names from the Safavid Period" by by Aryanhwy merch Catmael & Ursula Georges; http://www.s-gabriel.org/names/ursula/persian.html).

Name changed from [Delara yi Shirāzī] to [Delara-yi Shirāzī] to conform to the documentation.

  3. Hawk's Hollow, Canton of. New badge. Or, in fess three feathers palewise gules.

Name was registered in November 1991.

  4. Melodia Shaw. Device Resubmission. Azure, a double rose argent and sable within a harpframe argent.

    Name registered in October 2001.
The previous submission, [Azure, a double-rose argent and sable within an unstrung harp argent], was returned on the May 2006 LoAR: "This device is returned for a redraw of the harp frame. With its weirdly bent arms and lack of a soundbox, it is unrecognizable as an unstrung harp. On resubmission, the harp frame should be drawn as a standard harp (minus its strings)."

The redraw makes the harp frame clearly identifiable.

  5. Michael M'Quilline. Device Resubmission. Quarterly sable and azure, two rapiers in saltire surmounted by an arrow inverted, all within a bordure embattled argent.

Name was registered in December 2005.
The previous device submission, [Per pale sable and argent, two natural seahorses respectant counterchanged], was returned on the December 2005 LoAR.

This submission is a complete redesign, and it includes forms.

Thus ends my Letter of Intent.

In service and duty,

Furukusu Masahide
Rampart Herald
