(Unless otherwise noted, all submittors accepted all changes, had no authenticity requests, and wished a name with the "common sense" gender, based on the submitted name.)

The following items are sent to Laurel for a final determination:

  1. Adelina Marie de Castele. New Name.
    (Blaiddwyn)
The name was submitted as Adelina Marie de Castile but was unregistrable for being two steps from period practice: combining English given names with Spanish bynames is one step, and the use of two given names is a 16th Century convention while "Adelina" is not found later than the 13th Century and is thus a second step for temporal disparity. One commenter provides examples of a similar byname from Reaney and Wilson, under the header "Castle" - de Castell 1260, del Castel 1307, and ate Castele 1317. We therefore believe that "de Castele" is a reasonable English variant of a byname with similar meaning, and have selected this change of a single letter as the least intrusive way to make the name registrable.
  2. Anna MacTaggart. Device Resubmission (L). Per bend sinister gules and argent, a vol and a singly winged dragon sejant erect counterchanged.
    (Fontaine dans Sable)
Originally blazoned Per bend sinister gules and argent, a vol and a dragon sejant erect counterchanged, the lack of a second wing was noted in commentary.
  3. Caleb Stewart. Device Resubmission (K). Sable, a stag and a greyhound combatant Or.
    (Dragonsspine)
His previous submission with the same blazon was returned for incorrect depiction of combatant on the October 2004 Letter of Response. This redraw addresses the problem.
  4. Ewen Adin M'Kaill New Name.
    (Blaiddwyn)
Originally submitted as Ewen Adin MacKail this spelling of "MacKail" is not dated in our sources, though it is the header form in Black. We have changed the byname to "M'Kaill" as the closest spelling we could document (Black, header MacKail, Gilnow M'Kaill, 1575). The use of two given names was not known in Scotland in period, and have been registered as one step from period practice [Joseph Angus Wilson, A-Calontir, Sept '01]. Commenters were unsure if the use of a biblical name was known in Scotland in period and if there was therefore a second step from period practice making this combination unregistrable, but because the submitter specifically allows the element "Adin" to be dropped, we are sending it to Laurel for determination on that point.
  5. Fontaine dans Sable, Barony of. New Badge. Azure, a palm leaf palewise embowed Or within an orle of fleurs-de-lys points to center argent. For Order of the Golden Palm.
Blazoned on the forms as Azure, a Palm Leaf paleswise or, a semi of Fluers de Ly in Orle Points to Center argent, the blazon was changed to reflect current practice and the embowing of the leaf. While there are some instances of "frond" in the O&A, the original order name was returned for using the non-period word, "Frond," so "leaf" is used here instead. This order name was sent to Laurel on the August 2004 Letter of Intent.
  6. Fontaine dans Sable, Barony of. New Badge. Azure, a lion's gambe bendwise Or armed and distilling gouttes gules within an orle of fleurs-de-lys points to center argent. For Order of the Golden Paw.
Blazoned on the forms as Azure, a Lions gambe or, bendwise armed and distilling goutts gules, a Semi of Fluers de Ly in Orle Points to Center argent, the blazon was changed to reflect current practice and the orientation of the gambe.
  7. Fontaine dans Sable, Barony of. New Badge. Azure, in bend a palm tree embowed at the top to sinister chief and a lion couchant guardant Or within an orle of fleurs-de-lys points to center argent. For Order of the Oasis Guardians.
Blazoned on the forms as Azure, in bend a palm tree bendwise sinister and a lion crouchant gardant or, a semi of Fluers de Ly in Orle Points to Center argent, the blazon was changed to our best interpretation.
  8. Fontaine dans Sable, Barony of. New Badge. Argent, a three-tiered fountain sable spouting azure and in chief two ewers sable distilling into fountain top azure, all within an orle of fleurs-de-lys points to center azure. For Order of the Oasis Keepers.
Blazoned on the forms as Argent, a three-tiered fountain sable spouting azure and in chief two ewers sable in chevron spouting into top of fountain azure, a semi of Fluers de Ly in Orle Points to Center azure, and misblazoned on the Letter of Presentation as Argent, a three-tiered fountain sable spouting azure and in chief two ewers sable distilling into fountain top azure, all within an orle of fleurs-de-lys points to center argent, the blazon was changed and corrected to our best interpretation.
  9. Kristyan Macrae. New Name.
    (Fontaine dans Sable)
The name was submitted as Kristyan MacRae, but no documentation could be found to support the spelling "MacRae." We have changed the byname to match the documentation.
  10. Thomas Winterbourne of Kent. New Device. Per pale argent and sable, a tree between four spur rowels, two and two, all counterchanged.
    (al-Barran)
This name was sent to Laurel on the May 2004 Letter of Intent. The forms were marked "already registered," and have been corrected to show the in-process status. Originally blazoned Per pale argent and sable, a tree between four spur rowels all counterchanged, the arrangement of the rowels has been noted.
  11. Uilliam mac an Ruaidh. New Change of Name from William of Monmouth.
    (Bofharrach)
Originally submitted as Uilliam Mac an Ruaidh, the documentation did not support this spelling of "Mac," and it has been changed to match the documentation.
  12. Viğarr leğrhals. Device Resubmission (K). Per pale azure and Or, a double-bitted axe, and in base two arrows in saltire counterchanged.
    (Dragonsspine)
The previous submission with the same blazon was returned for lack of identifiability of the axe handle after counterchanging on the October 2004 Letter of Response. This redraw shows a much wider handle to address the problem.

The following items are returned for further work:

  1. Adelina Marie de Castele. New Device. Purpure chaussé, a triskele argent.
    (Blaiddwyn)
This device is returned for multiple conflicts. Because chaussé field divisions have no difference from Per chevron throughout or from a pile, this design conflicts with Trimaris, Kingdom of Azure, a triskele argent registered June 1995 with only 1 CD for the change to the field, with Wander Riordan Per fess wavy azure and argent, in dexter chief a triskele argent registered January 1991 (West) with only 1 CD for the field and no CD for the forced move from in canton, and with Gabriella Maddelena Pisano Argent, on a pile purpure, a houndstooth burnisher argent registered October 1985 (East) with only 1 CD for the change to the type of tertiary charge per RfS X.4.j.ii.
  2. Ewen Adin M'Kaill. New Device. Per pale argent and vert, a pile inverted gyronny vert and argent, in chief a roundel counterchanged.
    (Blaiddwyn)
This device is returned for multiple style issues. A pile (inverted)does not have room between the point and the edge of the field for another charge [Baldwin of Erebor, LoAR 6 December 1984, p. 18; Sorcha ingen Chonchobhair, 09/00, R-Meridies]. Further, while gyronny from an edge has not been explicitly banned, it is "extremely poor style" [LoAR 29 Mar 87, p. 3] which we interpret to mean one step from period practice. Also, because if this were considered to be a per chevron division, there is precedent against using a gyronny half-field that shares a tincture with the other half of the field for violation of RfS VII.7.a which requires elements to be "recognizable solely from their appearance." [Stefan Remnaia Palatka, 4/96, p. 19] Finally, because there are three distinct points to what is listed as a single pile, we are unable to determine whether this is intended to be a single pile, multiple piles, or some other field division.
  3. Ryan de Caergybi. New Augmentation. Per pale argent and gules, a griffin between six feathers in annulo counterchanged, and for augmentation, in fess point on an inescutcheon sable, a wagon wheel argent.
    (al-Barran)
This augmentation is returned for conflict with Serena Lascelles (Fieldless) A Catherine's wheel argent registered July 1996 (Ansteorra) with a single CD for the field, and with Raichbhe Walkman Per bend sinister gules and purpure, a cartwheel argent registered March 1999 (Lochac) with a single CD for changes to the field. Unfortunately, an augmentation that has the appearance of independent armory must be conflict checked as if it were independent armory.
  4. Uilliam mac an Ruaidh. New Badge. (Fieldless) On a compass star Or, a wolf's paw print sable.
    (Bofharrach)
Blazoned on the forms as A wolf's paw print sable Within a Mullet of 8 Points, greater and lesser Or the blazon was changed to reflect current blazon practice. Unfortunately, because there are clearly four greater and four lesser points, this badge is two steps from period practice: one for using the non-period compass star, and another for the non-period paw print, and it is returned for this style problem. This design is further returned for conflict with Stefan of Seawood Azure, upon a sun Or an eagle displayed sable registered January 1973 with 1 CD for field vs. fieldless, but nothing for the difference between a sun and a mullet [Nathaniel Constantine of Saxony, 09/01, R-Atenveldt], and nothing for the change of type only of a tertiary charge on a sun/mullet (RfS X.4.j).

Thus ends the February 2005 Letter of Response.
