UNTO François la Flamme, Laurel King of Arms, Margaret MacDuibhshithe, Pelican Queen of Arms, Gwenllian ferch Maredudd, Wreath Queen of Arms, and the College of Arms, upon this 25th day of February 2005, A.S. XXXVII (2004 CE),

DOES Lady Sorcha MacLeod, White Stag Principal Herald, send greetings and well-wishes.

Unless otherwise indicated, submitters accept all changes, desire the name with the common sense gender, and have no requests for authenticity. I present the following items for your consideration:

  1. Adelina Marie de Castele. New Name.
The name was submitted as Adelina Marie de Castile but was unregistrable for being two steps from period practice: combining English given names with Spanish bynames is one step, and the use of two given names is a 16th Century convention while "Adelina" is not found later than the 13th Century and is thus a second step for temporal disparity. One commenter provides examples of a similar byname from Reaney and Wilson, under the header "Castle" - de Castell 1260, del Castel 1307, and ate Castele 1317. We therefore believe that "de Castele" is a reasonable English variant of a byname with similar meaning, and have selected this change of a single letter as the least intrusive way to make the name registrable. Adelina is found in "Feminine Given Names in a Dictionary of English Surnames" by Talan Gwynek dated to XXXX, under the header Adeline. Marie is found in the same article under the header Mary dated to XXXX. Castile is found in "Spanish names from Late 15th Century" by Juliana de Luna under Locative Surnames: de Castil. The client cares most about the given name "Adelina," and desires a feminine name.
  2. Anna MacTaggart. Device Resubmission. Per bend sinister gules and argent, a vol and a singly winged dragon sejant erect counterchanged.
Originally blazoned Per bend sinister gules and argent, a vol and a dragon sejant erect counterchanged, the lack of a second wing was noted in commentary. The previous submission, Per bend sinister argent and gules, a dragon sejant erect and a winged maiden counterchanged was returned by Laurel in December 1999 because the maiden was not in a blazonable posture. This redesign removes that problem. Her name was registered December 1999.
  3. Caleb Stewart. New Device. Sable, a stag and a greyhound combatant Or.
His previous submission with the same blazon was returned for incorrect depiction of combatant on the October 2004 Letter of Response. This redraw addresses the problem. This is a new submission to Laurel. Name registered March 2004.
  4. Ewen Adin M'Kaill New Name.
Originally submitted as Ewen Adin MacKail this spelling of "MacKail" is not dated in our sources, though it is the header form in Black. We have changed the byname to "M'Kaill" as the closest spelling we could document (Black, header MacKail, Gilnow M'Kaill, 1575). The use of two given names was not known in Scotland in period, and have been registered as one step from period practice [Joseph Angus Wilson, A-Calontir, Sept '01]. Commenters were unsure if the use of a biblical name was known in Scotland in period and if there was therefore a second step from period practice making this combination unregistrable, but because the submitter specifically allows the element "Adin" to be dropped, we are sending it to Laurel for determination on that point. Ewen is documented in Black, Surnames of Scotland, header MacEwan, Gilpatrik mac Ewen, 1219. Adin is documented from the The Bible, Ezra 2:15, and Ezra 8:6 in "lists of those who'd returned to Jerusalem from Babylon." The submitter will NOT accept major changes, cares most about the sound, and desires a masculine name. The submitter specifically allows the middle name Adin to be dropped if it is a bar to registration.
  5. Fontaine dans Sable, Barony of. New Badge. Azure, a palm leaf palewise embowed Or within an orle of fleurs-de-lys points to center argent. For Order of the Golden Palm.
Blazoned on the forms as Azure, a Palm Leaf paleswise or, a semi of Fluers de Ly in Orle Points to Center argent, the blazon was changed to reflect current practice and the embowing of the leaf. While there are some instances of "frond" in the O&A, the original order name was returned for using the non-period word, "Frond," so "leaf" is used here instead. This order name was sent to Laurel on the August 2004 Letter of Intent. This branch name was registered August 1983 and updated March 2004.
  6. Fontaine dans Sable, Barony of. New Badge. Azure, a lion's gambe bendwise inverted Or armed and distilling gouttes gules within an orle of fleurs-de-lys points to center argent. For Order of the Golden Paw.
Blazoned on the forms as Azure, a Lions gambe or, bendwise armed and distilling goutts gules, a Semi of Fluers de Ly in Orle Points to Center argent, the blazon was changed to reflect current practice and the orientation of the gambe. This branch name was registered August 1983 and updated March 2004.
  7. Fontaine dans Sable, Barony of. New Badge. Azure, in bend a palm tree embowed at the top to sinister chief and a lion couchant guardant Or within an orle of fleurs-de-lys points to center argent. For Order of the Oasis Guardians.
Blazoned on the forms as Azure, in bend a palm tree bendwise sinister and a lion crouchant gardant or, a semi of Fluers de Ly in Orle Points to Center argent, the blazon was changed to our best interpretation. This branch name was registered August 1983 and updated March 2004.
  8. Fontaine dans Sable, Barony of. New Badge. Argent, a three-tiered fountain sable spouting azure and in chief two ewers sable distilling into fountain top, all within an orle of fleurs-de-lys points to center azure. For Order of the Oasis Keepers.
Blazoned on the forms as Argent, a three-tiered fountain sable spouting azure and in chief two ewers sable in chevron spouting into top of fountain azure, a semi of Fluers de Ly in Orle Points to Center azure, and misblazoned on the Letter of Presentation as Argent, a three-tiered fountain sable spouting azure and in chief two ewers sable distilling into fountain top azure, all within an orle of fleurs-de-lys points to center argent, the blazon was changed and corrected to our best interpretation. This branch name was registered August 1983 and updated March 2004.
  9. Kristyan Macrae. New Name.
The name was submitted as Kristyan MacRae, but no documentation could be found to support the spelling "MacRae." We have changed the byname to match the documentation. The only documentation given for Kristyan "Withycombe pg. 61." I find the name listed in Withycombe, 3rd under the header Christian(a) (pg. 65) as a feminine given name variant spelling in 1450. The only documentation given for MacRae is "Reaney pg. 293." I find the name listed as Macrae under the header Macrae in Reaney, 2nd impression (1961). I do not have access to Reaney and Wilson, and respectfully request a check of that source for the submitted spelling. Submitter will NOT accept major changes, cares most about an unspecified meaning, and desires a feminine name.
  10. Outlands, Kingdom of. Change of heraldic title degree, Liber Herald. This heraldic title was registered as Liber Pursuivant to Atenveldt, Kingdom of in April of 1981 (via Laurel) and transferred to the Kingdom of the Outlands in January of 2003 (via Atenveldt). The title is being used as a kingdom staff title, and the change of degree to Herald is to bring it in line with the rest of the kingdom staff titles.
  11. Thomas Winterbourne of Kent. New Device. Per pale argent and sable, a tree between four spur rowels, two and two, all counterchanged.
This name was sent to Laurel on the May 2004 Letter of Intent. The forms were marked "already registered," and have been corrected to show the in-process status. Originally blazoned Per pale argent and sable, a tree between four spur rowels all counterchanged, the arrangement of the rowels has been noted.
  12. Uilliam mac an Ruaidh. New Change of Name from William of Monmouth.
Originally submitted as Uilliam Mac an Ruaidh, the documentation did not support this spelling of "Mac," and it has been changed to match the documentation. No disposition of the original name (registered February of 1986 via Ansteorra) is listed; default action is release upon registration of the change. The submitter provides a copy of Academy of Saint Gabriel Report 2941, which gives "Uilliam mac an Ruaidh" as a plausible 16th century Scottish name. I note the capitalization on Mac does not match the documentation, but also that there are examples in the report which do capitalize Mac. The client will NOT accept major changes, cares most about the meaning, which he gives as "Uilliam, son of the Red," and is interested in authenticity for "Scots" language and/or culture.
  13. Viğarr leğrhals. New Device. Per pale azure and Or, a double-bitted axe, and in base two arrows in saltire counterchanged.
The previous submission with the same blazon was returned for lack of identifiability of the axe handle after counterchanging on the October 2004 Letter of Response. This redraw shows a much wider handle to address the problem. This is a new submission to Laurel. The name was sent to Laurel on the October 2004 Letter of Intent.

Thus ends my Letter of Intent. I count 3 new names, 1 new change of name, 3 new devices, and 4 new badges, for a total of 11 items for which payment is due to Laurel, as well as 1 resubmitted device. A check for $44 will be sent separately by the Outlands Exchequer.

In service and duty,
Sorcha, White Stag
