Unto Omar Mohammed Mirzazadeh, White Stag Principal Herald, and the College of Heralds of the Kingdom of the Outlands, does Randal Carrick, Rampart Herald send his greetings. What follows is the Letter of Response for November 2011 CE, ruling on the October 2011 Letter of Presentation. I would like to thank the following heralds for providing commentary for this letter: Mistress Francesca de Pavia, Ray-de-Soleil Pursuivant, Master Louis-Philippe Mitouard, Catspaw Herald Extraordinary; THL Eric Morrison, Hawk's Hollow Pursuivant; Lady Leonor Ruiz de Lison; Lord Andrew von Otelingen; Lady Katelin de Irlande; Lady Khalidah bint Yayah, Castle Herald; Faelan O' Laghlan; Ines Alfon, Blanch Tiger Herald; Lady Aritê gunê Akasa; Lady Rohese de Dinan, Shadowdale Pursuivant; and Gawain of Miskbridge, Green Anchor Herald.
The following items were forwarded to Laurel Sovereign for final determination:
- Caerthe, Barony of - Resub Order Name, Order of the Green Tree of Caerthe.
- Conrad von Zollern - Resub Badge, Per saltire Or and argent, a stag trippant contourny regardant within an orle vert.
- Conrad von Zollern - New Badge, Per chevron sable and argent, in pale a demi-sun issuant from the line of divison Or and an hourglass sable.
- Eleanor of Penn Forest - New Name and New Device, Per pale wavy purpure and argent, a skull and a staff of Asclepius contourny counterchanged. Submitter should note that the waves should be deeper, and the charges drawn larger to accomodate the available space...
- Ellinor Rose Sanbourne - New Name.
- Guy Herbert of Roteland - New Name (See RETURNS for device).
- Hrefna Cyrredsdottir - New Name & New Device, Quarterly sable and argent, a heart counterchanged.
- Lijsbet vande Visschereye - Resub Badge, (Fieldless) a lion erminois. Submitter should note that the ermine spots are very small, and may be returned for that reason.
- Máel Mide ingen Domhnaill - New Device, Per bend vert and sable, a bend between a dragonfly bendwise sinister and a deer hoofprint bendwise argent.
- Pipa de Blakemere - Resub Device, Per bend argent and sable, a natural panther rampant sable and a cross fleury argent, within a bordure embattled per bend purpure and argent.
- Quintin d'Acre - New Name & New Device, Azure, a crab within a bordure argent.
- Seamus O Mourane - Resub Name.
- Shoshanah Simkhah bas Ruven - New Device, Per fess vert and argent, a loaf of bread bendwise sinisterOr and a cauldron sable.
- Yasamin al-Hadiyya - New Device, Purpure, a senmurv within eight octofoils in annulo Or.
The following items were RETURNED for further work:
- Alysandir Keyth - New Name & New Device, Argent, a fox couchant guardant, on a chief gules three pallets Or. Returned for Conflict: Unfortunately, this lovely name conflicts with <Alexandra Keith> (reg. 08/1992 via Meridies); the given names are not significantly different in sound. An easy way to clear the conflict would be to add a locative at the end formed from a Scottish placename. So, the name would be <Alysandir Keyth of [placename]> or <Alysandir Keyth de [placename]>. If the submitter wishes to go this route and likes this article, it provides some placenames in the surnames section (http://www.s-gabriel.org/names/symonFreser/scottish14/scottish14_sur.html). You can find them by searching on "of " and "de ". (Using the spaces in the search string helps avoid instances of "de" inside a word.) The device must be returned for lack of a name to send it up with; the fox could stand to be drawn larger as well, but is not returnably small.
- Conrad von Zollern and Katelin de Irlande - Resub Household Name, Prioria Niger Leonis. Commentary suggests this construction would be problematic, and submitter was presented with a number of options for changes. Submitter indicated he would submit new paperwork based on online commentary.
- Diana Doria. New Device. Azure, a loom argent between a pair of flaunches sable with a semy of sparks argent. Returned for Redraw. Unfortunately, flaunches, being peripheral ordinaries, cannot be fimbriated, leaving this device with contrast issues of color-on-color. A simple redeisgn would be to make the flaunches argent estencelly sable or argent estencelly azure. As a caution, some commenters had issues with the identifiability of the loom, given the complexity of the depiction.
- Eishi Akimori - New Name. Returned for improper construction. This name uses a woman's given name used in a surname position, followed by a masculine namori. While submitter has no preference as to the gender of the name, the name must still agree in gender of its' elements internally. Furthermore, a number of commenters felt that the meaning of "High Status" might be too presumptive for registration.
- Guy Herbert of Roteland - New Device, Per pale argent and sable, wolves rampant adorsed and a chevronelle abassed counterchanged. Returned for Redraw. The SCA does not register single diminutives of ordinaries, and the positioning of "abased" is no longer accepted. If the submitter wants a chevron, it needs to be the primary charge on the device. A stylistically similar option that would present fewer problems would be to just use a base point rather than the chevronelle.
- Shahida al-Fustati - New Name. Returned for improper construction. The gender of the byname needs to match the gender of the given name, e.g., <al-Fustatiyya>. Unfortunately, since submitter allows no changes this correction cannot be made.
