Outlands LoI dated 2010-04-30
30 April 2010
From the Office of Rampart Herald
Baron Randal Carrick (Randall Jackson)
rampart@outlandsheralds.org
Unto the Sovereigns and members of the College of Arms of the Society, does Randal Carrick, Rampart Herald send his greetings. What follows is the April Letter of Intent for the Kingdom of the Outlands. I would like to thank the following heralds for providing commentary for this letter: Andrew von Otelingen, Furukusu Masahide, Francesca di Pavia, Gawain of Miskbridge, Rohese de Dinan, Thomas of Shrewsbury, Marie de Blois, Magdalena Lucia Ramberti, Ursula Georges, Kieran Blake, and Llywus ap Alan.
It is my intent to register this April the following items from the Outlands College of Heralds:
![]() 1: Aemilia Valeriana - New Device OSCAR finds the name registered exactly as it appears in November of 2008, via the Outlands. Azure, a wheel Or within two horse's heads conjoined at the neck in annulo argent, in chief two barrulets Or
Submitter's name was registered on the November 2008 LoAR (http://heraldry.sca.org/heraldry/loar/2008/11/08-11lar.html)
Submitter's previous submission, Azure, a wheel Or within a horse-headed torque argent, in chief two bars Or, was returned by Rampart under submitter's previously registered name of Emma Yate on the April 2008 Outlands LoR (http://rampart.outlandsheralds.org/2008-03-lop/0804-lor.html), stating: "The emblazon of the torque was too modern, and felt more like a modern corporate logo than SCA-period heraldry. Additionally, the bars in chief were too narrow, bordering on thin-line heraldry. Return for Redraw."
Submitter has re-drawn the horse heads. The blazon was changed by Rampart from Azure, a wheel Or within a horse-headed torque argent, in chief two bars Or. |
|
2: Alamanda de la Roca - New Name Submitter desires a feminine name. Gender: Female. Submitter cares most about the culture of the name, defined as "Catalonian". Submitter will not accept Major changes to the name. [Alamanda] - "Occitan Townspeople in the 14th Century" by Juliana de Luna (http://www.s-gabriel.org/names/juliana/occitan/) dates the name to 1370. [de la Roca] - "Catalan Names from 12th and 13th Century Charters" by Arval Benicoeur (http://www.s-gabriel.org/names/arval/catalan/catalanData.html) lists the name as a place name. |
|
![]() 3: Arbella Eden - New Name & New Device Sable, in chief three hearts argent Submitter desires a feminine name. Gender: Female. Submitter cares most about the spelling of the name, stating "Please do not change the spelling of Arbella, last name ok to change".
[Arbella] - submitter cites Arbella Stuart, who lived from 1575-1615. (http://tudorhistory.suite101.com/article.cfm/arbella_stuart), (http://elizabethan-era.org.uk/arbella_stuart.htm).
[Eden] - "Surnames in Durham and Northumberland, 1521-1615" by Julie Kahan (http://www.s-gabriel.org/names/juetta/parish/surnames_ef.html) dates the name to 1572 . We believe this is clear of Sable, in chief three pallets couped argent (Aug 2004 Atenveldt, Oslaf of Northumbria) by X.2. Consider: Sable, three hearts argent enflamed proper (Oct 1980 West, Wilhelm von Schwartzwald). There is one CD for change of position of the three hearts. We believe this is clear under X.2 as a change of type, as charges enflamed are considered to be "on a flame, a charge", making the hearts tertiary charges. |

![]() 4: Bardolf Gundwaldtsson - Resub Device OSCAR finds the name registered exactly as it appears in August of 2008, via the Outlands. Sable, a bear statant erect affronty, sinister forepaw upraised, within a bordure engrailed Or
Submitter's name was registered on the August 2008 LoAR (http://heraldry.sca.org/heraldry/loar/2008/08/08-08lar.html) via the Outlands.
Submitter's previous device submission, Erminois, a raven within a bordure sable, was returned on the same letter, stating: This device conflicts with the device of Arnóra hrafn Óláfsdóttir, Lozengy gules and Or, a raven within a bordure sable. There is a single CD for the changes to the field. This device is not in conflict with the badge of Friedrich Eric Helmut von Rheinhausen, Erminois, an eagle displayed within a bordure sable. There is a CD for the difference between an eagle and a raven, and another CD for the change in posture from displayed to close. This submission is a complete re-design. Submitter has included a Letter of Permission to Conflict from Gunwaldt Gulbjorn. We acknowledge that the bordure is rather thin, but the consensus of the commenters is that it is not returnably so. |

5: Caerthe, Barony of - Resub Order Name OSCAR finds the name registered exactly as it appears in January of 1973, via Laurel. Order of the Keystone of Caerthe
Branch name [Caerthe, Barony of] originally registered January 1973 via Laurel. Submitted on the Oct 2008 LoP, and Nov 2008 LoI as [Order of the Keystone of Caerthe]. Returned by Laurel on the March 2009 LoAR for conflict:
This is returned for numerous conflicts: Keystone Pursuivant, Order of the Keystone (both registered to Æthelmearc, Kingdom of), and Order of the Keystone of Lions Gate (registered to Lions Gate, Barony of). The addition of the branch name reference, of Caerthe, provides sufficient difference only in conjunction with a letter of permission to conflict. While the Barony noted that they were trying to obtain such letters, these letters had not been received by the Laurel office at the time of the publication of this LoAR
Resubmitted on the July 2009 LoP, and the September 2009 LoI as [Order of the Keystone of Caerthe]. Returned by Laurel on the January 2010 LoAR for conflict:
This is returned for conflict with the Barony of Lions Gate's Order of the Keystone of Lions Gate; the addition of the branch references of Caerthe and of Lions Gate do not clear the two names. While the LoI noted that permission to conflict had been received from Lions Gate, no letter attesting to this fact was provided to Laurel.
One of the letters of permission to conflict included with the September 2009 LoI was lost in transit. Letters of permission to conflict have again been included with this resubmission. A summary of other documentation is included for convenience: [keystone]: OED header [Keystone] under the common sense definition states the form [key-stone] used in 1637, and the form [keystone] used from 1703 on. While this does not fall specifically within period for our chosen spelling, several [keystone] names have been registered by Laurel, with the most recent being in 2006. The form [object] + [place] follows the common pattern [thing + place] as defined by "Project Ordensnamen" by Meradudd Cethin located at http://heraldry.sca.org/laurel/names/order/. This order name also follows the Laurel meta-patterns of "Orders named for heraldic charges" and "Orders named for places" as defined on the August 2005 LoAR Cover Letter. Please associate the badge [Sable, a keystone within a bordure embattled Or] (registered July 2006 via the Outlands) with this order name.
Per correspondence with Laurel, this is being resubmitted without inclusion on an LoP first, so that the missing paperwork can be reviewed. |

![]() 6: Dáirine inghean Ghriogair - New Name & New Device Per pale azure and Or, two bees and an open book counterchanged Submitter desires a feminine name. Gender: Female. Changes Accepted. Submitter's original name submission, Dairine inghean Griogair, was returned by Rampart on the May 2007 Outlands LoR (http://rampart.outlandsheralds.org/2007-04-lop/0705-lor.html), stating:
Gender: Female. The client cares most about the spelling of the name "Dairine". No major changes accepted.
Submitter has changed the name as indicated in the return, and allows further changes necessary to register the name
[Dáirine]: Academy of St Gabriel Report 1393 (http://www.s-gabriel.org/1393), 1105 (http://www.s-gabriel.org/1105), and 1487 (http://www.s-gabriel.org/1487) cite Dáirine as an early Irish Gaelic feminine name, which dropped out of use fairly early (pre-11th Century).
[inghean Ghriogair]: Academy of St Gabriel Report 1416 (http://www.s-gabriel.org/1416) gives Griogair as a Gaelic form of the Latin saint's name Gregorius. inghean Griogair is the feminine patronymic byname formed using this masculine given name. Submitter's previous device,Per pale azure and argent, an open book counterchanged and in chief three bees proper, was returned on the May 2007 Outlands LoR (http://rampart.outlandsheralds.org/2007-04-lop/0705-lor.html), stating:
Commenters indicate that there is no defined proper coloration for bees in the Glossary. There has been a precedent under [a bumblebee proper] from (Aideen the Audacious, September, 1993, Pg.1) which defines a bee proper as [sable and Or, with argent wings]. Please make note of this on resubmission.
Submitter has re-designed the device to address the concerns of the previous return. |

![]() 10: Simonides Spartiates - New Name & New Device Argent, a chevron and a chief wavy gules Submitter desires a masculine name. Name changed by Rampart from Simonides Spartenos with submitter's approval Gender: Male. Submitter cares most about the meaning and language/culture of the name, defined as "Simon from Sparta, Greek Byzantine." Changes Accepted.
[Simonides] - Encyclopedia Brittanica Online (http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/545258/Simonides-of-Ceos)lists Simonides of Ceos, c. 556-468 BC, a Greek poet noted for his lyric poetry, elegaics and epigrams. Also mentioned in Herodotus' The Histories.
[Spartenos] - "14th Century Names of Lay Proprietors in the Themes of Thessaloniki and Strymon" by Maridonna Benvenuti (http://www.maridonna.com/onomastics/lay.htm) dates Konstantinos Spartenos of Lozikin to 1265. Commenters noted the large time difference between the given name and the surname in the originally submitted name, and provided the following additional documentation:
The Lexicon of Greek Personal Names database search form at http://www.lgpn.ox.ac.uk/database/lgpn.php lists 44 different men named <Simonides> (spelled Sigma-iota-mu-omega-nu-iota-delta-alpha-sigma) in volumes 1 through 5a. If you don't read Greek, you can reconstruct this information by setting input to "symbol" and output to "beta code" and searching for names beginning with "sim". A chart describing the correspondence between beta code, standard transliteration schemes, and the Greek alphabet may be found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greek_transliteration .
Submitter was contacted and indicated that he preferred this construction of the name to a later Byzantine version Several commenters thought the chevron was a bit low, but not returnably so. |
|
![]() 11: Somisawhel de Sousa - New Name & New Device Argent, a rondel barry wavy azure and argent and on a chief azure three gouttes d'Eau Submitter desires a feminine name. Gender: Female. Submitter cares most about the language/culture of the name, left undefined. Submitter will not accept Major changes to the name.
[Somisawhel] - Submitter's legal given name (copy of driver's license included)
[de Sousa] - "Portuguese Names from the 16th Century: Letters from the Court of King John III" by Juliana de Luna (http://heraldry.sca.org/laurel/names/portugal16.htm)lists "de Sousa" a s a common locative byname in 16th C. Portugal. There was some concern about putting a fountain (roundel barry wavy argent and azure) on an argent field, but the submitter's herald noted this precedent: [... argent ... a fountain] It is acceptable to place a fountain on a field or underlying charge that shares one of the tinctures of the fountain as long as the fountain maintains its identifiability as a roundel barry wavy argent and azure (or the other way around.) As drawn in this emblazon, the identifiability of the fountain is not preserved. Because the top and bottom portions of the fountain are both argent, this appears almost as if it were three bars wavy couped on the sail. [Ástríðr in hárfagra, 07/03, R-Lochac] Rampart left the blazon as-is, rather than changing it to "a fountain" in light of the precedent quoted above. Submitter is fine either way. |
