1. al-Barran, Barony of. Name
resubmission for Order of the Bronze
Bell.
(al-Barran) No major changes
accepted.
The previous submission, Order of the Antares Kano, was returned on the
July
2006 Outlands LoR: "Commenters indicate that this order name does
not
follow any of the six general meta-patterns approved in Pelican's Order
Name
discussion on the August 2005 CL
(http://www.sca.org/heraldry/loar/2005/08/05-08cl.html). Further, this
order
name does not follow any of the known order grammatical name patterns
as documented
by Project Ordensnamen
(http://www.sca.org/heraldry/laurel/names/order/). Commenters
also indicate that the mixing of Greek and Anglo-Saxon/Norse languages
violates
Rfs. III.1.a: Linguistic Consistency - Each phrase must be
grammatically
correct according to the usage of a single language. Rampart notes that
each
name element must also be documented as having been used in period with
the
given spelling. This is normally done via reference to the Oxford
English
Dictionary. No documentation was provided for this order name. The
Administrative Handbook, part IV.C.2 requires that documenting evidence
must be
included for all name elements as well as name construction patterns.
Order
Name returned for lack of documentation."
No documentation is provided with the current submission.

name and device. Argent semy of
roses sable stemmed vert seeded Or.
(al-Barran) Gender not
specified. The submitter cares most about the language /culture of the
name, stated as 15th Century England. He requests a name authentic to
that time and place, but no major changes are accepted.

cites four occurrences of this given name on monumental brasses prior
to 1600 CE.

period text in 1193 (www.s-gabriel.org/names/badger/placenames.html)

name and device. Chevronelly sable
and ermine.
(al-Barran) Gender: Female.
The submitter cares most about the sound of the name. Changes accepted.
Beatrice: The cited source, Academy
of St Gabriel Report 1771, documents this spelling, but only as an
oblique case in Latin, not for a nominative. Withycome (p. 44, header
BEATRIX, BEATRICE, states that the given spelling is Italian; the

of Shakespeare's Much Ado About
Nothing.

The previous submission, Dreyfuss
K'ravyn McKillin, was returned on the December
2007 Outlands Letter of Response: "The name return is first and
foremost for the undocumented element [K'ravyn]. Secondly, the name is
returned for using a surname as a given name, and thirdly the name is
returned for using poor documentation (genealogy websites are
insufficiently documented, as we rely upon primary sources, while
genealogy most resources are secondary resources at best). Returned for
work. There were no conflicts found at this time for the device, but
unfortunately it must be returned for lack of a name to send it up
with, as holding names are not created at a Kingdom Level."
Druisten: Black, Surnames of
Scotland, p. 221), cites Drostan.
No header or specifics cited [and I
do not have a copy myself to go look it up - Castle]. "A Consideration of Pictish Names"
by Tangwystyl verch Morgant Glasvryn (http://www.s-gabriel.org/names/tangwystyl/pictnames/pict3_4.html)
cites Druisten as an 8C
Pictish given name.

10. Muirenn Ghlass ingen

salient to sinister and a thistle counterchanged.
(Citadel of the Southern Pass)
The name was submitted to Laurel on the February
2008 Outlands Letter of Intent as Muirenn
Ghlais ingen Fáelán. The previous device
submission, the same as the current submission, was returned on the March
2006 Outlands Letter of Response for lack of a name with which to
forward it. Commentary at that time: "Commenters indicate that the
device may be in conflict with Miranda Douglas of Schiehallion,
September 1983: Per bend sinister vert and argent, a horse's head
erased, crined of flames, and two thistles conjoined pilewise
counterchanged. There is one CD for change of half of the primary
group (Horse's head to wolf), and there may be a CD for changing the
thistle. This may be two thistles or it may be a double thistle."
Thus ends the July 2008
Letter of
Presentation.
