Unto Marie de Blois, White Stag Principal Herald and the
Outlands College of Heralds, does Æðeluulf Munec,
Rampart Herald, send well wishes this day. I write you concerning
the January Letter of Response for the Kingdom of the
Outlands.
I wish to thank the following people for assisting on
commentary for this letter, being: Llywus ap Alan Arglwydd,
Wharrow; Marie de Blois, White Stag; Gawain of Miskbridge, Green
Anchor; and Tyr von Wolfsberg, Wimble.
The following items have been sent to Laurel for final
determination:
- Alys Bouchard. New Device. Azure, three crescents argent conjoined one and two, in chief a mullet of four greater and four lesser points Or.
- Andreas von Wittelsbach. New Name.
- Anna Bythewaters. New Name and Device. Per bend sinister wavy argent and azure, a frog tergiant vert and a cattail slippped and leaved argent.
- James Boyer. New Name.
- John Boyer. New Name and Device. Azure, a lion couchant Or and a chief wavy argent.
- Lilian Boyer. New Name and Device. Argent, a cross gules, in dexter chief a quail proper
- Stephen Axtell. New Name and Device. Per pale azure and gules, an arm couped embowed sustaining an axe Or.
The following items were returned for rework:
- Andreas von Wittelsbach. New Device. Quarterly (checky azure and argent) and (gules, a gryphon passant Or). This falls afoul of RfS XI.3, as it is classically marshalling. Barring conflicts, it would be possible to register either "checky azure and argent" or "gules a gryphon passant Or", so this is clearly marshalling of these two devices. Additionally, there are some artistic issues with the device: Firstly, The gryphon is drawn very small, and is almost indistinguishable as a gryphon. It should be drawn to fill the space better, and possibly have a little internal detail so it can be distinguished from other winged quadrepedial creatures. Secondly, Checky should be drawn with an even number of traits across the top (both of these have 5 traits apiece), and in a quarterly situation, both checky quarters should have the same tincture in the upper lefthand corner.
- Caerthe, Barony of. Resubmission of Order Name "Order of Evan". This item was returned for not following the guidelines of Order Name creation. The form Order of [Name] is only applicable to Saint's names, all orders named after secular people are post-period. There is a period saint named "Evan", but changing the order name to "Order of Saint Evan" was deemed to be too major of a change to remain within the Barony's wishes.
- Caoilinn inghean Caoimhin Ó Tighe. New Name and Device. Per pale purpure and argent, a Greek symbol 1000 voided, counterchanged. The only documentation provided for the name did not contain the submitted given name as a dated spelling, and so cannot be used in good faith. Submitters are urged to use dated spellings from documentations, rather than any anglicised or modernised spellings found therein. Additionally, the use of the infinity symbol falls afoul of precedent banning the use of solitary abstract symbols [Iohann se pipere, 7/00].
- James Bowyer. New Device. Argent, on a lozenge purpure, a saltire and two crescents in pale argent. It was decided that if the submitter wishes to display their arms on a lozenge shape, they should use the lozenge form (which is not restricted in it's use). If the submitter wishes to have the primary charge a lozenge, it should be drawn to touch all the sides of the blank form, however the submitter will run into layering issues if they add any more charges. Regardless, the device is in need of re-drawing to address the lozenge issue.
This ends the January Letter of Response, dated this Thirty-first day of January in the year of grace Two Thousand and Eight, being the forty-second year of the Society, and the rememberance of Saint Marcella. I remain in service to Crown and Laurel Sovereign.
