The following items were sent on to Laurel for final determination:

  1. Eoin Kerr. New Name.

  3. Fontaine dans Sable, Barony of. New Order Name: Order of the Palma Aurea.
  4. Fontaine dans Sable, Barony of. Order Name Resubmission: Order of the Sprite.
  5. Fontaine dans Sable, Barony of. Order Name Resubmission: Order of the Winged Pheon.
  6. Raisa Zaplatskaya. Device Resubmission.
Blazon changed from [Gules, a mask divided per pale argent and sable, comedy to dexter and tragedy to sinister, all within a bordure argent and sable] to [Gules, a mask of tragedy sable dimidiated with a mask of comedy argent within a bordure compony sable and argent] to properly describe the mask and tincture order.
  7. Readstan, Canton of. Branch Name Resubmission.

The following items were returned for further work:

  1. Conall MacCellaich. New Name.

Gender: Male. The submitter is interested in a name authentic for Scots language/culture (time period not specified), and is most interested in the language/culture of the name. No major changes accepted.
Conall: Academy of St. Gabriel Report 806 (http://www.s-gabriel.org/806) lists "Conall" as a Gaelic male name.
MacCellaich: Academy of St. Gabriel Report 806 (http://www.s-gabriel.org/806) lists "Cellaich" as the genitive form of the Gaelic male name Cellach, and indicates that the patronymic is formed by combining [mac] + the genitive form of the father's given name.

Summary provided is insufficient to send the name forward. Furthermore, the St. Gabriel's report does not indicate specific dates for either of the names used, other than to mention they would go well with an early name.
This item was pended for cross reference of cited sources in St. Gabriel's report and update of summary on the October LoR.

Rampart unfortunately does not have any of the three sources cited on the St. Gabriel's report. A further search of the Rampart library could not produce a dated form of the name [Conall] other than references in suspect sources as the name being "early." This is insufficient for our purposes, and the name must therefore be returned for lack of documentation.
Please also note that simply indicating the source documentation and including copies of that documentation is insufficient summary of the documentation. Summaries should include location of referenced material, explain the construction of the name, and document and date all the name spellings.

Name returned for lack of documentation.

  2. Fontaine dans Sable, Barony of. Order name resubmission: Order of the Hourglass.

    No major changes accepted.
This has been previously submitted as the Order of the Sands and Order of the Wellspring. The most recent return was on the July 2006 Letter of Response. The new name is submitted under the "Thing" pattern as cited in Project Ordensnamen (www.sca.org/heraldry/laurel/names/order). "Sands" was determined to be too generic to be registerable under this heading. "Hourglass" corrects this issue - it is very specific. "Wellspring" was found to have been attempted and returned by Laurel on at least two other occasions. This award is to be given to newcomers to the SCA who show great promise.

Commenters indicate that [hourglass] is not a period spelling, according to the OED. The entry for [hour-glass] dates forms with the common meaning to the 16th century, but with spellings that vary from that submitted. [houre glass] is dated to 1591, [houre-glasse] to 1588, [our glasse] to 1511. Changing the submission to one of the period forms would require the addition or deletion of multiple characters, and changes in spacing or punctuation. This would go beyond a minor change, and must therefore be returned to the submitter.
Other than the specific spelling of the term [hour-glass] commenters could see no reason this order name could not be registered.

Thus ends my Letter of Response.

In service and duty,

Furukusu Masahide
Rampart Herald
