UNTO the Outlands College of Heralds, our respected friends and colleagues who give freely of their time to provide commentary, and all others who come by these letters, on this Letter of Presentation, on the 16th day of July A.S.XXXX (2005 CE), does Lord Cameron deBlakstan send greetings on behalf of Lady Sorcha MacLeod, White Stag Principal Herald.

Anyone may comment upon the items found herein, and e-mail commentary to the above address is encouraged. Please have comments on items contained herein to Lady Sorcha by 13 August, 2005, for the White Stag decision meeting scheduled for 14 August 2005.

I present the following items for your consideration:

  1. Airt the Scot.    New Name.    New Device.   Or, upon a roundel vert four pheons arrayed crosswise, points outward Or.

    Submittor cares about the meaning of the name:  Art who was born in Scotland.   Gender is  male. Submittor prefers the spelling 'Airt' but will accept any form of 'Art' or 'Ar'.
    Documentation for the name 'Art' is cited from OCorrain and Maguire's Irish Names, pg. 24.  the Scot is documented in Black's Surnames of Scotland under SCOT on pg. 714.
  2. Alianora de la Forest.   New Name.   New Device.   Azure, a demi-maiden proper crined issuant from a base wavy Or.

    Submittor will not accept major changes.  The sound of the name is most important.  Gender is female.
    Alianora is ound in Reaney and Wilson as a variant of 'Eleanor', as cited in "Feminine Given Names in a Dictionary of English Surnames" by Talan Gwynek. (www.s-gabriel.org/names/talan/reaney) cited to 1428.  de la Forest is cited to 1421 in "French Surnames from Paris, 1421, 1423, and 1438" by Aryanwhy merch Catmael (www.ellipsis.ex/~liana/names/french/paris1423surnames.html)
  3. Anton von Strasburg.   New Name.   New Device.   Azure, on a fess wavy argent a bridge sable, in chief three mullets of eight points Or.

    Submittor cares most about the meaning of the name: Anton of Strasburg.  Gender is masculine.
    Anton:  From "Late Period German Masculine Given Names" by Talan Gwynek.  Names extracted from Volkmar Hellfritzch, Vogtlandische Personenamen (Berlin 1974).  Anton was listed as a Christian name 1501-1550.  (Names from 16th Century Plaven)
    Strasburg:  Strasburg is the header in Dauzat for 6th century Stratebuze.  (Pg. 655)
  4. Briana duBois.   Name Resubmission.

    Submittor cares most about the sound of the name.  Gender is feminine.
    Name was returned Jan 2004 for one weirdness and combining Welsh, English, and French.  It was suggested that the name could be submitted as "Briana duBois", since Briana is literary feminine name in English late period and duBois is a French surname.  See attached copies of LOI Aug 2003 and LoAR Jan 2004.
    * Note from Pendar - Change of holding name from Briana of Nahrun Kabirun. She is using Laurel's notes from the return of her name to justify her resubmission.
  5. Caíreach inghean uí Giolla Phadraig    New Name   New Device   Purpure, two natural panthers addorsed, tails nowed,on a chief argent three falcon's heads erased vert.

  6. Einarr Skallagrmsson.   New Name.   New Device.   Per bend sinister wavy sable and vert, a triskelion of dragon's heads Or.

    Submittor will not accept major changes.  Cares most about language/culture.  Gender is masculine.  Wishes to be authentic for 10th century Norse period/culture.
    Einarr and Grmr found in Haraldsson's "The Old Norse Names"
    Skalla is a prefix from same.
  7. Elijah Tynker.   New Name.    New Device.   Per Pale sable and argent, a sickle and roundel counter changed.

    Submittor will not accept minor/major changes to name even if name cannot be registered without such changes.  Gender is masculine.
    Elijah is submittor's given name.
    Tynker is found in "An Index to the 1332 Lay Subsidy Rolls for Lincolnshire, England" by Mari Elspeth nic Bryan (www.s-gabriel.org/names/mari/LincLSRl) in the section of full names sorted by byname under "T", which lists "Thomas Tynker".  Tinker is also a header form in Reaney and Wilson's "Dictionary of English Surnames" with spellings dated to 1240.
  8. Jannah al-Ghazaliyya.   New Name.   New Device.   Per fess indented gules and argent, a gazelle courant Or and a lotus in profile gules.

    Submittor will not accept major changes.  Cares most about the meaning:  Given name - Garden, harvest or paradise.  Byname - gazelle.  Gender is feminine.  Will NOT allow a holding name.
    "Jenna" is submittor's legal name.  [Documentation included with submission.]  She would prefer to use the transliteration of the name, Jinnah or Jannah, if it is acceptable.  In commentary of submission Shayk Da'ud ibn Auda found 'Janna' in Ahmed's A Dictionary of Muslim Names, and said 'Jannah' is a more accurate transliteration but in Ahmed is not dated.  I have also seen 'Jinnah' and would prefer it if it can be documented and is acceptable.  Otherwise I revert to my legal name if neither transliteration is accepted.
    'Al-Ghazali' was the byname of the great Sufi mystic and scholar, Abultamid al-Ghazali (1058-1111 A.D.)  Bio found at www.ghazali.org/articles/gzl.htm .  The byname is also listed on pg. 41 of the Compleat Anachronist #51 on Pg.1 of the same article, updated, the feminized form of masculine cognomens is shown by changing the final 'i' to 'iyya' or 'iyyah.'  Hence, Ghazaliyya.
  9. Kathryn Brian Chevreuil.   Change Device (Release old device).   Per pale sable and ermine, two swans rousant respectant counterchanged.

  10. Kymma Godric.  Change Name (Keep old name as alternate).
    Submittor will not accept major changes.  Cares most about the language/culture of 12th-13th century.
    Kymma - Derived from Olde English feminine name "Cymme," a pet form of "Cyneburh," (Reaney and Wilson)
    Godric - Found in Reaney and Wilson, s.n. Goodrich, dated by citation; Ralph Godric 1199.  (More Documentation attached.)
  11. Lyonnete du Soleil.   Change Name.

    Submittor will not accept major changes.  Cares about the sound of the name.  Gender is feminine.
    Per the June 2002 LoAR, for "Suzanne du Soleil" (Atenveldt) "Clarion found support for this byname:  Morlet, Dictionnaire Etymologique des Noms de Famille (the updated Dauzat), pg. 905, s.n. Soleil, gives Soleil as a hamlet name, which makes du Soleil plausible."  It is important to note that this entry in Morlet lists le Soleil, as a variant of this placename.  Therefor, du Soleil (du beingn a contraction of de le) is a valid locative byname based on the placename referenced in Morlet."  Submittor wishes to keep the registered given name of Lyonnete.
  12. Magdalene de Saint Benoit-sur-Loire.   New Name.   New Device.   Per bend sinister vert and gules, a dragon displayed rampant, in chief two compass stars Or.

    Submittor cares most about the sound of the name.  Gender is masculine.
    Michael is found in Black, Surnames of Scotland, under MacCracken, pg. 479.  Michael Makcraken was a follower of the Earl of Cassilis reported for murder, 1526.
    MacQuillan is found in Black, Surnames of Scotland, under MacQuillan as the modern form of MacCoilon/MacCailin/MacCailein - 'Son of Colin' page 560.
    * Note from Pendar  - His name was returned from Kingdom in January 2005 for insufficient documentation of this spelling of McQuillan. He has chosen to drop the element "of Blackthorne" because his reasons for including it no longer exist. His device, Per pale sable and argent, two natural seahorses, respectant counterchanged., was pended awaiting a name. Please be sure to include it along with this name resubmission so that it doesn't get overlooked.
  15. Order of the Arch.   New Order Name.

    Based on Project Ordensnamen, Order of <Thing> is consistent with period order names and the tangible object of an arch was certainly known in our period.  e.g. Oak, ship and the shell, etc.
  16. Order of the Foal.   New Order Name.

    Submittor will not accept any major changes.
    Based on Project Ordensnamen, Order of <Creature> was a well-established order naming structure (e.g. Dragon, Dove, etc.)  Dictionary.com traces the word "foal" to ME "fole" and OE "fola" so this term for a young horse is definitely period.
  17. Order of the Bards Militant.   New Order Name.

    This nomenclature is not as closely related to period practice but many religious/military orders are similar.  If necessary we will accept "Order of the Militant Bards of Caer Galen" or "Company of the Militant Bards of  Caer Galen" which is very like Boulton's "Company of the Grail-Templars of Saint George" without the religious references.
  18. Ramon the Chronologer.   New Badge.   Fieldless, an hourglass gules between four compass stars in saltire azure.
