(Unless otherwise noted, all submittors accepted all changes, had no authenticity requests, and wished a name with the "common sense" gender, based on the submitted name.)

The following items are sent to Laurel for a final determination:

  1. Auriana Danburge. New Primary Name.
Although Danburge was documented as a given name, there is the possibility that this may be an unmarked matronym or placename. Therefore we are sending it to College and Laurel in hopes of assistance. A commenter writes, "Matronyms were rare in Dutch names; I've only found one example (though it happens to be unmarked!): 1422 from , in my '15th Century Dutch Names' (http://www.ellipsis.cx/~liana/names/dutch15.html)."
  2. Blackwater Keep, Shire of. New Change of Registered Name.
There was some commentary that this would be much more authentic as "Shire of Blacwatyr" but is registrable as it stands.
  3. Kathws Rusa. Resubmission - Laurel Device. Azure, a scimitar inverted and sinister-facing proper issuant from a trimount vert, in chief two crescents Or.
Originally blazoned "a scimitar proper", it is also inverted and the edge faces to sinister, and was reblazoned to "a scimitar inverted and sinister-facing proper".
  4. Mari the Far-Travelled. New Primary Name.
Mari is the submitter's legal name and a copy of her ID was provided. Mari is also found in "Names and Naming Practices in the Registers of the Church of St. Mary's, Dymock (Gloucestershire, England: 1538-1600/1)" by Mari Elspeth nic Bryan (http://www.s-gabriel.org/names/mari/dymock/), where it is marked as being under the header Mary. In The Sagas of the Icelanders by Jane Smiley, on page 265, in the Tale of Thorvald the Far-Travelled, the main character is referenced as "Thorvald Kodransson, called the Far-traveller". Also, in a search on the Viking Workshop website (http://viking.hgo.se/), there is an Ingvar the Far-Travelled (Ingvar Vittfaren, Ingvar den vittfarne), described as a chieftan and ship captain named Ingvar who went on many adventures somewhere between 1036 and 1040 AD. She would like to use the Lingua Anglica allowance to render 'Far-Travelled' in English.
She cares most about the meaning "Mari who has travelled extensively".
  5. Omar al-Saqr al-Antaki. New Primary Name and New Device. Per pale vert and sable, a falcon displayed and in base a sword fesswise reversed argent.
Although the documentation for al-Antaki is a scholarly source, it does not necessarily have a period form of the name,. Antioch was a place in our period known to the Arabs, and therefore we we are sending it up to Laurel and the College of Arms in hopes that they know of a documentably period form.
While the falcon is rather small, it is probably not returnably so. Please draw the falcon larger, so that it fills the space.
  6. Outlands, Kingdom of. Transfer of heraldic title. Gold Trumpet.
The Kingdom's name was registered in July 1986. The heraldic title Gold Trumpet was registered to the Kingdom of the Outlands in May 2002, for Timothy O'Brien's sole and exclusive use for his service to heraldry in the Outlands.
  7. Theodor von Oldenburg. New Primary Name.
We are sending this up, but a close period citation for the byname is "Oldenborch", which is dated to 1384 in Brechenmacher on page II:345.
  8. Timothy O'Brien. Acceptance of transfer of heraldic title. Gold Trumpet.
Timothy's name was registered in February 1998. The heraldic title Gold Trumpet was registered to the Kingdom of the Outlands in May 2002, for Timothy's sole and exclusive use for his service to heraldry in the Outlands.
  9. Vivienne Kestrel la Fauconnière. New Primary Name.
While prior registration is no guarantee of future registrability, we find the following precedent to be pertinent: "There was some question about the plausibility of Vivienne in period. Morlet, Dictionnaire étymologique des noms de famille, (p. 969 s.n. Vivien) gives Vivienne as a matronymic form. Combined with the example of Vivien le serjant in Colm Dubh's article "An Index to the Given Names in the 1292 Census of Paris" (http://www.sca.org/heraldry/laurel/names/paris.html), Vivienne is a plausible period form." [Vivienne de Lampérière. 05/02, A-Caid]

The following items are returned for further work:

  1. Blackwater Keep, Shire of. New Change of Registered Device. Or, a tower within a laurel wreath gules and a base engrailed sable scaly Or.
This base is drawn slightly high, but not returnably so. Please draw it slightly smaller in the future. However, the laurel wreath is drawn sufficiently incorrectly that this device must be returned. A proper laurel wreath should be a nearly complete circle, so that there is no room for a charge between the tips. "A properly drawn laurel wreath should not have sufficient room between its tips to place another charge. [Darkstone, College of, 02/00, R-Middle]" [Uma, Shire of, 10/01, R-Drachenwald]
  2. Cælin Wynter. New Primary Name.
This name is returned for both lingual and temporal inconsistencies. The name combines Old English and Middle English elements and includes a temporal disparity of over 300 years. Since neither major nor minor changes were allowed, this name cannot be changed to resolve the inconsistencies. However, either Colin Wynter or Collin Wynter or C{ae}lin Winter would be similar but not have the inconsistencies. While it appears that changing the vowel in the given name should be a minor change, which the submitter does not allow, it actually changes the language of the name element, which is considered a major change, which the submitter seems to wish to allow. However, without specific instructions as to what changes will be allowed, and considering that the possible major changes could be interpreted by the submitter to be minor spelling changes - which are disallowed - we have no choice but to return this submission in the hopes of receiving clearer instructions.
  3. Mari the Far-Travelled. New Device. Per bend azure and vert, a winged horse's head couped at the shoulder reversed between three compass stars Or.
This device is returned for redraw. The horse's head is not properly winged - the "wings" seem to be a stylized mane, instead of wings. These are also not "compass stars", they are "mullets of eight points", which is the more medieval type of star or mullet. They do not necessarily need to be redrawn, but the blazon and the emblazon should match.
  4. Mari the Far-Travelled. New Badge (Fieldless) From the lower three points of a compass star, three feathers pendant Or.
This badge is being returned for violation of RfS VII.7.B. Reconstruction Requirement, which requires that, "Elements must be reconstructible in a recognizable form from a competent blazon.". Additionally, some commenters felt that this was also in violation of VII.1 Period Charges and VII.3 Period Artifact, for its similarity to the western Native American "dreamcatcher". Although this may be a period artifact, there is no documenatation showing that it was known to Western Europeans during our period.
  5. Michael McQuillan of Blackthorne. New Primary Name and New Device. Per pale sable and argent, two natural seahorses, respectant counterchanged.
This name is returned for insufficient documentation of this spelling of McQuillan. [cite Ursula] Since no major changes were allowed, this name cannot be changed to one of these forms, nor can the problematic element be dropped, and must be returned.
Blazoned as hippocampi, I would note that these are not the heraldic monsters, and so should be blazoned as "natural seahorses".
  6. Theodor von Oldenburg. New Device. Or, on a tankard azure, a rabbit's head erased argent.
This device is being returned for conflict with the badge of Kathryn atte Unicorn, (Fieldless) On a tankard azure a unicorn's head erased argent armed Or, with only one clear difference for the field, and no difference for the unicorn's head vs. rabbit's head or for the tincture of the horn ('armed Or'). While the rabbit's head is rather small, it is probably not returnably so. When resubmitting, please draw the rabbit's head larger, so that it fills the space.
  7. Vivienne Kestrel la Fauconnière. New Device. Azure, a sun radiant Or and a pair of falcons rising respectant, wings displayed and inverted, argent all one and two.
This device is returned for conflict with both Wendryn Townsend, Azure, a sun in glory Or, and Paul of Sunriver, Azure, a compass star Or, with only one clear difference for adding the falcons. Moving the sun to chief as a secondary charge clears these conflicts, and on cursory check does not appear to create any new ones.
