UNTO the members of the College of Heralds of the Kingdom of the Outlands, and all others who generously give of their time and talents in commentary on this Letter of Presentation, upon this 9th day of June, A.S. XXXVIII (2003 CE), does Lady Alia Marie de Blois, Rampart Herald, send greetings and those commendations which are appropriately due.

Unless otherwise specified, all changes are allowed by the submitter.

  1. Briana Bronwen Du Bois. (Citadel) Name Resubmission (Kingdom).
    This exact name was returned by the Outlands in April 1996, for using two SCA-Compatible names. However, in the Cover Letter of the December 2001 LOAR, Briana is noted as being documented for English, instead of being merely SCA-Compatible. Bronwen is SCA-Compatible, upheld as recently as December of 1999. Du Bois is found in "French Surnames from Paris, 1421, 1423 & 1438" by Aryanhwy merch Catmael (http://www.ellipsis.cx/~liana/names/paris1423surnames.html), with this spelling dated to 1421 and 1423. She will not allow major changes, wishes a female name, and has no other requests.
  2. Briana Bronwen Du Bois. (Citadel) Device Resubmission (Kingdom). Azure, a dove displayed and on a point pointed argent a tree blasted and eradicated sable.
    Her previous device submission, Per chevron azure and argent, a dove displayed argent and a tree blasted and eradicated sable, an orle wavy counterchanged, was pended in April 1996 when her name above was returned. This version drops the orle.
  3. Cailte Caitchairn. (al-Barran) Name Change from Caoilte Caitchairn.
    Caoilte Caitchairn was registered on the March 1996 LOAR. At that time Laurel Da'ud noted that it was a bit odd that she used the later form Caoilte, and that Cailte was an earlier form. Indeed, Cailte is found in Irish Names, by O'Corrain and Maguire, on page 42, under the heading Cailte. She does not care about the gender (and is aware this is still a masculine name), and wishes to be authentic for "600-800 Irish".
  4. Caitilin inghean Sean. (Citadel) New Name.
    Caitilin is documented from "Feminine Given Names in the Annals of Connacht: 1224-1544" by Mari Elspeth nic Bryan (http://www.s-gabriel.org/names/mari/AnnalsConnacht/FemGivenNamesAlpha.html). 'inghean' is 'daughter of'. Sean is found in Irish Names by O'Corrain & Maguire, on page 163, under the header "Seaan, Sean". She wishes a female name, cares most about language/culture, and is interested in being authentic for an unspecified language/culture (presumably irish/celtic/gaelic/etc.).
  5. Caitilin inghean Sean. (Citadel) New Device. Per chevron azure and argent, in page a wolf's head uulant and a dumbek counterchanged.
  6. Citadel of the Southern Pass, Barony of the. (Citadel) Order Name Resubmission (Laurel). Order of Arquites Australis.
    The Barony's name was registered in February 1984. This is a complete reworking of their previously returned Order name, Order of the Archers of Agincourt, which was returned by Laurel in September 2002, and also of their previously returned Order name, Order of Poitiers, which was returned by Rampart in October 2002.
    This Order name is documented with definitions from: Harry Thurston Peck, Harpers Dictionary of Classical Antiquities (1898) (http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/cgi-bin/ptext?doc=Perseus:text:1999.04.0062). Under 'arquites', it says to look under 'sagitarii', which says "The bowmen of the Roman armies. These were generally raised by levy or furnished by the allies. The Cretan, Balearic, and Asiatic bowmen were especially celebrated." This Barony already has other Order names using 'Australis', meaning 'southern'.
  7. Cumhal Colach. (Fontaine) New Name.
    Cumhal is documented from the Dictionary of Celtic Mythology by James MackKilliop, which lists on page 106 Cumhal, under the heading Cumhall, as being the father of Fionn in the Fenian Cycle. Also provided was a copy of "Names of Ireland" (http://www.unet.univie.ac.at/~a8700035/irnames.html), which lists Cumhal under the list of Male Names. Colach is documented from "Index of Names in Irish Annals" by Mari Elspeth nic Bryan, as a descriptive byname (http://www.s-gabriel.org/names/mari/AnnalsIndex/DescriptiveBynames/Colach.shtml), which dates it to 1402. He will not accept any changes, wishes to be male, and desires authenticity for "15th century Irish" time period.
  8. Elia Stefansdottir. (al-Barran) New Name.
    Elia is found in Withycombe's English Oxford Dictionary of Christian Names, on page 100, dated to 1346. Stefan is found in Geirr Bassi's The Old Norse Name, on page 15, and formed into the patronymic with the addition of -dottir, based on ibid. page 17. She cares most about the sound, wishes a female name, and has no authenticity requests.
  9. Elia Stefansdottir. (al-Barran) New Device. Per fess azure and vert, a beaver contourny Or.
  10. Floriana de Priego. (al-Barran) New Name.
    Floriana is found in "16th Century Spanish Women's Names" (http://www-2.cs.cmu.edu/~kvs/fnames.html). 'de Priego' is found in "Names used in Cordoba towards the end of the 15th century" (http://www.historiaviva.org/nombres/nombres_cordob15-ing.shtml). She cares most about language/culture, wishes a female name, and has no authenticity requests.
  11. Helena Outlander. (Fontaine/Rio de Las Animas) Name Change from Helena Orduuelle.
    Her name, originally submitted as Helena Ordeville, was registered as Helena Orduuelle in the March 2002 LOAR. She considers the change to have been very dramatic and resulting in a very difficult and awkward name which does not have her desired meaning and is difficult to pronounce. She allows no changes and wishes a female name which means "one who lives in outlying lands" which is "SCA- authentic" for "11th-13th century". No documentation was received for "Outlander", but this seems to be a reasonable formation from the Kingdom name "Kingdom of the Outlands".
  12. Lucas de Caid. (??) New Device. Azure, a chevron and in chief two stag's heads cabossed Or.
  13. Marcus Arabis. (al-Barran) Name Resubmission(?) (unknown).
    The history of this name and device (below) is somewhat shrouded in the mists of time. Last submitted (according to the file I have here) through the Kingdom of Atenveldt in 1982, the only indication of its disposition at that time is a notation on the form "Held WSH". I am trying to find out more information about it. Marcus is a roman name found in "Common Names of the Aristocracy in the Roman Empire During the 6th and 7th Centuries" (http://www.sca.org/heraldry/laurel/names/byzantine/PLRE_masc_names.html) by Berret Chavez, aka Bardas Xiphias. Back in 1979, Arabis was documented as "a weed-like plant". As no forms nor documentation were received for the name this time around (recall, back then, name and devices were submitted together on the same form, and additionally, the client thought it might already be registered, so it's understandable), I don't know what preferences the submittor has regarding this name.
  14. Marcus Arabis. (al-Barran) Device Resubmission (unknown). Argent, a bend per bend sinister sable and gules, overall a bird migrant azure.
    As noted above, this is a resubmission of a device whose history is rather patchy. At one point, it was blazoned as Argent, a Navajo water-bird displayed azure, and returned by Atenveldt for conflict with Francesca, Azure, a dove displayed, head elevated, argent .
  15. Milo Sohnovich. (al-Barran) New Name.
    All parts of this name are documented from A Dictionary of Period Russian Names by Paul Wickenden of Thanet (as found on http://www.sca.org/heraldry/paul). Milo is found on http://www.sca.org/heraldry/paul/mi.html under Milo, dated to 1243. Sohn is found on http://www.sca.org/heraldry/paul/si.html under Son, dated to 1090. The byname is constructed according to the section on Grammar (http://www.sca.org/heraldry/paul/zgrammar.html), by adding 'ovich' to the end of a suitable given name (here, Sohn). He is interested in a male name authentic to "Slavic, before 14th C" time period and language/culture.
  16. Milo Sohnovich. (al-Barran) New Device. Per bend sinister sable and gules, between a decrescent, horns to center, argent and a scimitar bendwise sinister proper three bezants in bend sinister.
  17. Rois inghean Domhnaill. (Citadel) Change of Holding Name from Danette of the Outlands.
    Rois is found in "Index of Names in Irish Annals: Feminine Names" by Mari Elspeth nic Bryan (http://www.s-gabriel.org/names/mari/AnnalsIndex/Feminine/all.html). 'inghean' is 'daughter of'. Domhnaill is the lenited form of Domnall, which is found in Irish Names by O'Corrain and Maguire on page 75. She cares most about the language/culture, wishes a female name, and is interested in having a name authentic for "Irish" language/culture.
  18. Sveinn Grimarsson. (St. Golias) New Device. Per chevron vair and Or, in base a raven displayed sable.
