Unto Baron Timothy O'Brien, White Stag Principal Herald, and the College of Heralds of the Kingdom of the Outlands, does THL Khalidah bint Yahya'a, Rampart Herald, send her greetings.
What follows is the Letter of Response for July 2020 CE, ruling on the June 2020 Letter of Presentation (http://oscar.sca.org/index.php?action=100&loi=6532). The June 2020 LoP consists of items submitted from March 2, 2020 through June 1, 2020.
I would like to thank all of the heralds who were kind enough to provided commentary.
The following items were RETURNED for further work:
Calin al-Zarqa' - New Device. Per chevron inverted purpure and vert, in chief a roundel between an increscent and a decrescent argent
Returned for a conflict with Bridget of Cornwall [01/2014 via Ealdormere]: Per fess azure and vert, in chief a plate between in fess an increscent and decrescent argent. There is 1 DC for the field.
Euphemia de Argyll - New Device. Vert, four passion nails two and two Or, on a chief dovetailed argent three ears of wheat azure
Returned for a rework as the passion nails are not in a blazonable position. Two and two implies that the passion nails are centered in the field and over one another. As drawn, the upper two are spread out further from the lower two. While Kingdom does recognize a potential reason for drawing the nails on the field this way, it isn't blazonable nor can it be easily reproduced. A device must be blazonable to be registered.
Jeanne Claire Desrosiers - New Name & New Device. Or, a chevronel purpure between two chevronels vert, in chief two domestic cats rampant sable
Name returned for a rework with proper dated documentation. The source cited for the byname dates "Antoine Desrosiers" to May 2nd, 1650, just barely squeaking in as support for a speculative late-16th-century name. Unfortunately, there's no way to tell from the citation whether it's a valid or meaningful source. At a minimum, we'd need to know what the text is, who wrote it, and on what page the name appears, and to have an English translation of the cited text in order to evaluate it. See the Administrative Handbook (http://heraldry.sca.org/admin.html#IV.C). And while the name can be constructed from elements, there is no documentation supporting it as use as an actual byname in period. The assertion of the byname, Des Jardins making Desrosiers possible is not documentation. Documenting dated locative bynames that involve elments within a garden would be proper documentation for the creation of Desrosiers. The device is returned for a redraw and lack of name to go with it. The line and color emblazons do not match one another in design. The chevronels are much closer together and the cats are different in design on the line. The color emblazon has noticable fimbriation on the chevronels and on the cats. This fimbriation needs to be removed. The color emblazon should also be fully colored in with Crayola Classic Markers or their digital equivalents.
