Unto Fiachra ni Ciardhubhain, White Stag Principal Herald, and the College of Heralds of the Kingdom of the Outlands, does Randal Carrick, Rampart Herald send his greetings. What follows is the Letter of Response for November 2012 CE, ruling on the October 2012 Letter of Presentation. I would like to thank the following heralds for providing commentary for this letter: Mistress Fiachra ni Ciardhubhain, White Stag Principal Herald; Mistress Francesca de Pavia, Ray-de-Soleil Pursuivant, Master Louis-Philippe Mitouard, Catspaw Herald Extraordinary; THL Eric Morrison, Hawk's Hollow Pursuivant; Lady Leonor Ruiz de Lison; Lord Andrew von Otelingen; Lady Katelin de Irlande; Lady Khalidah bint Yayah, Castle Herald; Faelan O' Laghlan, Readstan Pursuivant; Ines Alfon, Blanch Tiger Herald; Lady Shoshanah Simkhah bas Ruven; Aryanhwy merch Catmael; Mari ingen Briain meic Donnchada, Aldyrne Herald; Gunnvor silfraharr; Andreas von Meißen, Nautilus Herald; Alys Mackyntoich, Eastern Crown Herald; Modar Neznanich, (Interim) Gold Falcon Herald; Lady Pipa Sparkes; Lady Rohese de Dinan, Shadowdale Pursuivant; Lord Einarr Grimsson, Gold Falcon Herald emeritus; Ursula Georges, Green Staff Herald; and Gawain of Miskbridge, Green Anchor Herald.
The following items were forwarded to Laurel Sovereign for final determination:
- Bree Norwood - New Name & New Device. Sable, two serpents erect, on a chief engrailed argent a cinquefoil vert between two cinquefoils sable.
- Dairenn of Galway - Resub Device. Azure, a fox's mask argent and a ford proper, on a chief enarched argent, two trefoil knots vert.
- Elspeth Wynterbourne - New Name Change.
- Farin le Breton - New Name Change
- Juan Osorio de Segovia - New Name
The following items were RETURNED for further work:
- Faolan Ó Lacháin of Galway - New Badge. (Fieldless) a crescent gules sustaining a wolf's paw print sable. Withdrawn by submitter.
- Gilliana Leigh Gallwey - Resub Device. Sable, between three bulls' heads erased argent, armed and engorged of a strand of pearls Or, three roses proper on a chevron argent. This device was deemed too complex by a large number of submitters, with five tinctures (argent, Or, sable, vert, gules); four types of charges (head, chevron, roses, pearls) for a total of 9 (over the limit of 8 per SENA A.3.E.2) http://heraldry.sca.org/laurel/sena.html#A3E2. However, some evidence was presented that this may be an allowable device as it is in a strongly period style. There was some indication from commenters at the decision meeting that the submitter wished to re-draw the device to reduce the complexity, so it is being returned to allow that to happen. If that is not the case, submitter can appeal this return based on the commentary of Alys Mackyntoich, and I will send it to Laurel for determination. in such a case, the inclusion of examples of period armory containing these design elements would be appreciated.
- Hawkril de Honeybun - New Name & New Device. Sable, a dragon's skill pierced with swords and a chief embattled argent. Even though submitter provided no documentation for this name, commenters were able to find support for variants of this name, including <Hawk Rill Honnybun> or <Hawk Rill Hunnybun> (Essentially, "Hawk" can be found as an English surname, and by precedent used as a given name. "Rill" and "Hunnybun/Honnybun" are both found as surnames, and double surnames are allowed). However, because making any of these changes constitutes a major change to the name which submitter has not allowed, this name must be returned. The device is returned for lack of a name to send it up with, as well as for multiple issues on it's own. Several commenters noted that this looks more like a bull's head cabossed rather than any type of skull, due to the lack of any detailing. More significantly, the position of the swords is not readily blazonable because they are not in any identifiable period arrangement like "in saltire". The device should be re-drawn to improve the identifiability of the skull and re-arrange the swords into a recognizable configuration (note that this will require a new conflict check, which could identify other issues).
- Juan Osorio de Segovia - New Device. Argent, a bear rampant sable and in sinister chief, an estoile gules and a gore sinister vert. SENA Appendix J: Documented and Forbidden Arrangements of Charge Groups on Armory lists a number of designs with three or more charge groups on the field that have been documented. Because this device does not fit into any of them (the closest being "A primary charge group, a secondary charge group around the primary charge group (semy, in orle, or numbered charges), and a peripheral ordinary."), this device needs to have individual documentation to support this arrangement. http://heraldry.sca.org/laurel/sena.html#AppendixJ
- Sander von Zeitz - New Device. Vert, a pall azure a sun and two pair of arrows in saltire Or. This device violates normal rules of contrast, with an azure pall on a vert field, and must be returned for that reason. Further, on re-draw, submitter should be aware that the secondary charge group of sun and arrows violates the "unity of posture" rule of SENA A.3.D.2.C (essentially, the arrows in saltire cannot be used in combination with the sun). http://heraldry.sca.org/laurel/sena.html#A3.
- Sophie von Schönburg - New Device. Argent, a bend sinister between an oak leaf and a bee volant azure. Returned for conflict with Thomas of the Isles (reg. 03/1994 via Caid), Argent, a bend sinister between a chair, back to sinister, and a roundel azure. There is one DC for changing the type of secondaries.
Thus ends the November 2012 Letter of Response.
