Unless otherwise specified, the submittor allowed all changes, wanted a name with the "common sense" gender (or did not specify), and had no authenticity requests.

My thanks to the following for their commentary: Aryanhwy merch Catmael; the Caerthan Commenting Group; canute; Gawain, Green Anchor.

The following submissions were passed on to Laurel and the College of Arms for final consideration:

  1. Bella Porcellane. New name and new device. Argent, a sprig of belladonna proper within a bordure purpure ermined argent.
Submitted as Bella de Porcellane, it was changed to match the documentation (which does not have 'de'). It was noted in commentary that there may be a possible conflict with the O'Connor Don (December 1994) Argent, a tree eradicated vert, but I wish the opinion of the College and Laurel, et. al. on the matter.
  2. Caer Galen, Barony of. New Order name. L'Ordre de la Dague Noire.
Submitted as Order of the Sable Dagger, which used the heraldic tincture, the exemplars in Project Ordensnamen all use the standard color name. I informed them of this issue and, in consultation, they preferred a fully French form over "Order of the Black Dagger". In particular, this is in the pattern [Color] + [Thing] (per Project Ordensnamen) (NB: in French, the color follows the noun). This particular French translation was done with the aid of the Dictionarium latinogallicum by Robert Estienne in 1552 via the nice folks at ARTFL (http://www.lib.uchicago.edu/efts/ARTFL/newhome/ref/). This dictionary provides translations from period Latin to period French (so have a Latin dictionary at hand when using it!).
  3. Caleb Stewart. New name and new device. Sable, a demi-rabbit argent issuant from a helm inverted affronty, and in chief three cups inverted Or.
At least one commentor found the combination of charges (issuant rabbit, multiple inverted charges) difficult to identify, and/or possibly modern, but this is not my call.
  4. Elias Treviranus. New name and new device. Vert, on a pile inverted throughout between two eagles Or, a tower vert.
This would probably be better as Elias von Trier, and I wouldn't be surprised if Laurel (via Pelican) changes it to such, but I'll pass it up as is.
  5. Fontaine dans Sable, Shire of. New heraldic title. Black Fountain Pursuivant.
  6. Gabriel de Morland. New name and new device. Azure, a bend sinister argent and in dexter chief a cross pattée concave Or.
  7. Geoffrey fitz Robert. Device change. Quarterly azure and gules, a cross argent between four compass stars Or.
  8. Halla in heppna Kn{o,}rsdóttir. New name. (See Returns for device.)
  9. Maria Theresa Sanchez Garcia. New name and new device. Sable, a camel statant to sinister, in chief a crescent and on a base argent a fleur-de-lys sable.
Submitted as Maria Theresa Sanches de Garcia, the 'de' was dropped since Garcia is a patronymic and not a locative, and no major changes were allowed. For a period formation, I would have at least dropped one of the given names (since Juliana's article specifically says there were no women (in her sampling) which had two given names).
  10. Marie Edeline. New name.
This is a lovely period name.
  11. Odile Balestra. New name and new device. Quarterly azure and argent, two natural seahorses argent.
  12. Ormr bogsveigir. New name and new device. Per fess counter-ermine and vert, in pale a crescent inverted and a drawn bow fesswise nocked of an arrow Or.
Submitted as Ormr Bogsveigir, the byname was lowercased to match the current transliteration scheme for Norse names, as noted by the following precedent (and upheld October 2002 by Laurel):
  13. Submitted as Emma inn Draumspaki, we have changed the gender of the byname to match the given and changed it to lowercase to match conventional Old Norse spelling. [Emma in draumspaka, 04/00, A-An Tir]

  14. Randal Carrick. New badge. (Fieldless) A carrot Or leaved vert.
  15. Safya al-Mughanniya bint Ziyad al-Misri. New name and new device. Per pall argent, vert, and sable, a lotus flower affronty sable and two hands of Fatima argent.

The following submissions were returned for further work:

  1. Caer Galen, Barony of. New Order name. Order of the Muse.
As my best guess, this Order Name was intended to follow the pattern [Creature] or possibly [Person] (based on Project Ordensnamen (http://www.sca.org/heraldry/names/order/). Project Ordensnamen describes the [Creature] type as "Creatures - both fantastic and real beasts" and the [Person] type as "Names - personal names, including those of Christ and God." All commentary I received on this item said about the same thing: Muses aren't beasts, and so aren't suitable candidate for the [Creature] type, nor is "Muse", as a general category of beings, suitable for the [Person] Type. Additionally, one of the commentors pointed out the following precedent:

[Order of the Nereid] ... Lacking evidence of order names being formed from the names of gods or demigods, this order name is not registerable. [Atlantia, Kingdom of, 12/01, R-Atlantia]

Therefore, without a suitable pattern that matches, combined with the explicit precedent, this Order Name is being returned.
  2. Caer Galen, Barony of. New Order name. Order of the Song.
As my best guess, this Order Name was submitted as following the pattern [Thing] (based on Project Ordensnamen (http://www.sca.org/heraldry/names/order/). Unfortunately, Project Ordensnamen describes the [Thing] type as "Things - tangible objects including plants". All commentary I received on this item said about the same thing: a song, being an intangible and ephemeral thing, isn't a suitable candidate for the [Thing] type. The submittors mentioned the existence of the Order of Silence as noted in Frederick Badger's "A Collection of Period Order Names" (http://www.nwlink.com/~badger/sca/ordernames.html). However, this Order Name is categorized in Project Ordensnamen as a [Quality] type, which are "intangible descriptors". A song doesn't seem to be one of those either. Therefore, since there isn't really a Project Ordensnamen pattern which matches, this Order Name is being returned.
  3. Emery de Fittun. New badge. (Fieldless) A heraldic rose ermine barbed and seeded azure.
Unfortunately, this badge is returned for conflict with Anna Ridley, (Fieldless) A cinquefoil ermine, registered May 2001. There is one CD for fieldlessness, but none for the difference between a rose and a cinquefoil, per the following precedent: "... Current precedent holds that a rose is not different from a cinquefoil. [Katrein Adler, 02/02, R-Outlands]". Also, while we blazon the tincture of the barbs and seeds, they do not count for difference. Bummer.
  4. Fontaine dans Sable, Shire of. New Order name. Guardians of the Oasis.
As my best guess, this Order Name was submitted as following the pattern [Group] + [Place] (based on Project Ordensnamen (http://www.sca.org/heraldry/names/order/). Project Ordensnamen describes the [Group] type as "Groups - names of groups of people" and the [Place] type as "Places - countries, cities and buildings". All commentary I received on this item said about the same thing: "the Oasis", is really a rather generic place and is unlikely to be a suitable candidate for the [Place] type. Therefore, this Order Name is being returned.
  5. Fontaine dans Sable, Shire of. New Order name. Keepers of the Waters.
All commentary I received on this item said about the same thing: "Waters" is not a suitable candidate for the [Place] type. I was unable to determine any other patterns which matched. Therefore, this Order Name is being returned.
  6. Fontaine dans Sable, Shire of. New Order name. Order of the Golden Frond.
This Order Name is being returned because, although formed properly, the word "Frond" does not occur in the intended meaning until the 1700s. Order of the Golden Palm would be a perfectly fine one, though.
  7. Halla in heppna Kn{o,}rsdóttir. Device. Purpure, a cross formy throughout Or.
This device is being returned for a variety of reasons, all stemming from the fact that this is a pretty odd cross formy throughout. Part of the problem is that this isn't really a cross formy, nor yet a cross moline, but some kind of hybrid of the two. This, in conjunction with the fact that it is throughout and that each arm meets at a point (ie, no center to the cross), leads to difficulty in identification. Is it a weird cross? Is it a gyrrony at an odd angle? There's no telling, thus the return.
  8. Violetta Bellafiori. New name.
Unfortunately, my Italian and my knowledge of opera were not up to the task of noticing that "Violetta" is only listed in conjuction with "La Traviata", which is a well post-period opera. Since it's not found in period, the name must be returned. Bummer. However, Viola is well known as (at the least) a literary figure in Shakespearean plays, Viola Bellafiori should be registrable.
