I present the following items for your consideration:
(Unless otherwise noted, all submittors will accept all changes, have no authenticity
requests, and wish a name with the "common sense" gender, based on
the submitted name.)
- Bella de Porcellane. (Caerthe) New name and new device.
Argent, a sprig of belladonna proper within a bordure purpure ermined argent.
Bella is found in "Italian Renaissance Women's Names" by Rhian Lyth
of Blackmoor Vale (http://www.sca.org/heraldry/laurel/names/italian.html).
Porcellane is found in the Online Castato of 1427 (http://www.stg.brown.edu/projects/catasto/newsearch/family_names.html).

and appears to be for the name "Domenico Giovanni Porcellane". Based
on that - should this simply be Bella Porcellane?
She cares most about the sound, and is interested in authenticity for "15th
c. Italian" language/culture.
- Caer Galen, Barony of. (Caer Galen) New Order name. Order
of the Muse.
The barony's name was registered in May of 1980. This Order name is documented
using "Project
Ordensnamen" by Meredudd

and "A Collection of Period Order Names"
by Lord Frederic Badger (http://www.nwlink.com/~badger/sca/ordernames.html).
It appears to be of the pattern (used in Project Ordensnamen") of "Creature"

The barony's name was registered in May of 1980. This Order name is documented

and is dated to 1370 and 1432 in this form.

- Elias Treviranus. (Dragonsspine) New name and new device.
Vert, between two eagles displayed, a pile inverted Or charged with a tower
vert.
Elias is found in "Late Period German Masculine Names" by Talan
Gwynek (http://www.sca.org/heraldry/laurel/names/germmasc.html)
where it is listed in the section "Names from 16th Century Plauen". Treviranus
is found in the Dictionary of German Names (Edda Gentry translation)
by Bahlow on page 513, which lists "Treviranus: a person from Trier (name
from the Celtic tribe, Treveri)".
He cares most about the meaning ("A person from Trier") and the language/culture
("German"), and is interested in authenticity for "German" language/culture.
- Emery de Fittun. (al-Barran) New badge. (Fieldless) A
heraldic rose ermine barbed and seeded azure.
Her name was registered in July 2003.
- Fontaine dans Sable, Shire of. (Fontaine) New heraldic
title. Black Fountain Pursuivant.
This group's name was registered in August of 1983. (They should be a Barony
by the time this goes to LoI.) The primary charge on their device is a black
fountain. This formation seems to
follow
the pattern
of "heraldic
charges as heraldic titles".
- Fontaine dans Sable, Shire of. (Fontaine) New Order name.
Guardians of the Oasis.
This group's name was registered in August of 1983. (They should be a Barony
by the time this goes to LoI.) This Order name is documented using "Project Ordensnamen" by Meredudd
Cethin (http://www.sca.org/heraldry/laurel/names/order/).
I'm guessing it's of the pattern"Group + Place". Does this need to be the Order
of the Guardians of the Oasis?
- Fontaine dans Sable, Shire of. (Fontaine) New Order name.
Keepers of the Waters.
This group's name was registered in August of 1983. (They should be a Barony
by the time this goes to LoI.) This Order name is documented using "Project Ordensnamen" by Meredudd
Cethin (http://www.sca.org/heraldry/laurel/names/order/).
I'm guessing it's of the pattern"Group + Place". Does this need to be the Order
of the Keepers of the Waters?
- Fontaine dans Sable, Shire of. (Fontaine) New Order name.
Order of the Golden Frond.
This Order name is documented using "Project Ordensnamen" by Meredudd
Cethin (http://www.sca.org/heraldry/laurel/names/order/).
It appears to be of the pattern"Color + Thing".
- Gabriel de Morland. (Blaiddwyn) New name and new device.
Azure, a bend sinister argent and in dexter chief a cross pattée concave Or.
Gabriel is found in The Oxford Dictionary of Christian Names by Withycombe
on page 118, which dates it 1210. de Morland is a locative surname found
in A Dictionary of English Place-Names by Mills on page 234, dated
to 1140.
He cares most about the meaning ("Strong man of God"), and is interested
in authenticity for "English" language/culture.
- Geoffrey fitz Robert. (al-Barran) Device change. Quarterly
azure and gules, a cross argent between four compass stars Or.
If this device is registered, he wishes the default action to occur - releasing
the old device.
- Halla in heppna Kn{o,}rsdóttir. (Dragonsspine)
New name and new device. Purpure, a cross formy throughout Or.
All parts of this name are documented from The Old Norse Name by Geirr
Bassi. Halla is found on page 10. in heppna is the feminine form of 'inn
heppni', which is found on page 22. Kn{o,}rsdóttir is a patronymic
found on page 12.
FYI, {o,} is an o with a hook under it (curving to the
right, not left like a comma). However, this character does not appear in
most computer character sets, so this fairly recent addition to the Da'ud
Notation System (http://www.grt-net.com/Heraldry/Names/Da_ud_Notation/da_ud_notation.html) is
used instead.

probably Norse), and is interested in authenticity for "9th-10th C. Hiberno-Norse"

- Maria Theresa Sanchez de Garcia. (St. Golias) New name
and new device. Sable, a camel statant to sinister, in chief a crescent and

Both Maria and Theresa are documented from "A Partial List of Leonese and
Castilian Given Names 1050-1200"

Marie is the sixth most frequent feminine name. Surnames are listed separately
(http://www.ellipsis.cx/~liana/names/paris1423surnames.html) and
Edeline is listed once in 1421. Her form notes that "If the surname must
be changed, the client prefers it begin with an 'e'". I see no reason (barring
conflict) for any part of this name to be changed.

- Odile Balestra. (Blaiddwyn) New name and new device. Quarterly
azure and argent, two natural seahorses argent.
Odile is found in Dizionari dei Nomi Italiani by De Felice on page
284 under the heading Odilia. Balestra is found in Dizionario dei Cognomi
Italiani by De Felice on page 68 under the heading Balestra.

("Italian").
- Ormr Bogsveigir. (Dragonsspine) New name and new device.
Per fess counter-ermine and vert, in pale a crescent inverted and a drawn
bow fesswise nocked of an arrow Or.
All parts of this name are documented using The Old Norse Name by
Geirr Bassi. Ormr is found on page 13. Bogsveigir is found on page 20, meaning
"bow-swayer" or "archer".
He will not accept major changes, cares most about the meaning (unspecified),
and is interested in authenticity for "Viking" language/culture.
- Randal Carrick. (Caerthe) New badge. (Fieldless) A carrot
Or leaved vert.
His name was registered in January of 2001 via the Outlands.
- Safya al-Mughanniya bint Ziyad al-Misri. (St. Golias)
New name and new device. Per pall argent, vert, and sable, a lotus flower
affronty sable and two hands of Fatima
argent.
This name is entirely documented from Academy of Saint Gabriel report # 2651
(http://www.panix.com/~gabriel/public-bin/showfinal.cgi?2651),
which is a request from this submittor. Some relevant excerpts:
- The Arabic word
for "[female] singer" is {al-mughanniiyah}
- The word for "[male] Cairene" is {al-Qaahirah} [5].
However, we
recommend that you avoid this byname: We have found no example of it
in period sources. The original name of the city of Cairo is
{al-Qahirah al-Mu'izziyyah} "the Victorious [city] of [the
caliph]
Mu'izz li-Din Allah", since shortened to {al-Qahirah} [6].
A byname
meaning "the victorious" might have been seen as inappropriate
or it
might simply have been grammatically inconvenient to construct a
byname from this place name. In any case, men from Cairo seem to have
been identified as {al-Misri} "the Egyptian" rather
than "the Cairene" [7, 8].
- We therefore recommend you use <Safya al-Mughanniiyah bint Ziyad
al-Misri> or <Safya al-Mughanniiyah bint Suhayb al-Misri>. [Rampart:
she had also indicated in her inquiry an interest in using Suhayb instead
of Ziyad.]
