Unto Fiachra ni Ciardhubhain, White Stag Principal Herald, and the College of Heralds of the Kingdom of the Outlands, does Andrew von Otelingen, Rampart Herald, send his greetings.
What follows is the Letter of Response for March 2013 CE, ruling on the February 2013 Letter of Presentation.
I would like to thank all of the heralds who were kind enough to contribute comments on OSCAR with special thanks to the following Commentary Groups: GMCGIHCNBDS, NE Calontir Commenting Group, and the Dragonsspine Commenting Group.
The following items were forwarded to Laurel Sovereign for final determination:
- Adelaisa Bernoe - New Name (See Returns for Device)
- Jantien van Vranckenvoert - Device Resub. Sable, an escallop within a bordure argent.
- Joseph Grimm - New Name.
- Livia Agrinali - New Device. Per pale purpure and sable, a winged rose and in chief a crescent argent.
- Reyna Wolf - New Name & New Device. Or, a wolf rampant to sinister gules within a bordure sable.
- Ronan Wulf - New Name (See Returns for Device).
The following items were RETURNED for further work:
- Adelaisa Bernoe - New Device. Gules, a tree eradicated Or, in chief five estoilles enarched Or.
This device must sadly be returned for using an unregisterable motif of items in arch. No conflicts were found - therefore, if the estoilles were moved into a blazonable position (such as in fess) a resubmission is possible.- Prescedent Set:
Meadhbh ni Dhubhthaigh. Badge. Sable, a tankard Or foamed argent and in chief five gouts in arch Or. This badge is returned for violating our ban on having charges in arch. This practice is disallowed by precedent: "This device must be returned for using an arch of charges, a practice long forbidden in SCA heraldry." [01/2005 Atlantia R-Timothy of Shaftesbury]. [07/2009 LoAR]
- Prescedent Set:
- Alditha de la Tye - New Badge. (Fieldless) A squirrel sejant erect sable.
Withdrawn by submitter. - Gerald Beckett - New Device. Per chevron sable and vert, a european eagle owl displayed affronty argent.
This device must be returned both for style and conflict issues.- Style: Per precedent, this line of devision is too low to be "Per cheveron" and too high to be a "Point Pointed". 50% of the chevron should be above the per fess line, 50% below.
- Conflicts: Because this is displayed, it must be checked against all Eagles. Therefore there are multiple conflicts. Some are:
Francesca of Bright Angel (reg. 01/1973), "Azure, a dove displayed, head elevated argent"
Este, House of (reg. 12/1994 via Laurel), "Azure, an eagle displayed argent crowned Or."
Nemanjici, Kings of Serbia (reg. 05/2002 via the West), "Gules, a double-headed eagle crowned argent."
Poland (reg. 12/1994 via Laurel), "Gules, an eagle displayed argent crowned Or."
John of Ean Airgead, called the Mad Celt (reg. 10/1979 via Meridies), "Vert, a chimney swift migrant palewise argent. [Chaetura pelagica]," and (reg. 09/1980 via Meridies), "Vert, a chimney swift migrant palewise holding in its beak a holly leaf fesswise argent."
- Ronan Wulf - New Device. Argent, a chevron sable between 3 wolves rampant gules, a bordure sable.
This must be returned for style issues. Both the Chevron and the Bordure are significantly too thin. The chevron worse so than the bordure.- What is depicted here is a "Chevronelle." The SCA does not register single deminutive charges. The lack of clarity of the primary charge/primary charge group is the primary reason for return. Therefore, to fix it:
- A second Chevronelle of about the same size would be necessary to make it two (or more) chevronelles.
OR - The chevron is the primary and central charge. Therefore it should hold the most weight of anything on the device. In which case the chevron should be twice to three times as thick as it is.
- A second Chevronelle of about the same size would be necessary to make it two (or more) chevronelles.
- The bordure is too thin and should be about twice as thick.
The bordure issue would not have been enough to return the device on its own. - The wolves can shrink to fit the available space. They are secondary charges - therefore not primary. Make sure identifyability is maintained as they are sized to fit.
- What is depicted here is a "Chevronelle." The SCA does not register single deminutive charges. The lack of clarity of the primary charge/primary charge group is the primary reason for return. Therefore, to fix it:
- Rowland McCain - New Device. Vert, a hand in benediction argent, issuant from base a demi-sun Or.
Sadly this must be returned to conflict.- Thorin of Bexhill (Sept 1990 Caid) Vert, a hand argent and a bordure rayony Or.
- SENA A.5.G.2 forbids this from being adding and removing a charge group - since both the Sun and the Bordure are sole secondary charge groups.
- 1 DC for change of type of secondary from a bordure Rayony to a demi-sun in base. (SENA A.5.G.4)
- Thorin of Bexhill (Sept 1990 Caid) Vert, a hand argent and a bordure rayony Or.
Thus ends the March 2013 Letter of Response.
