Outlands College of Heralds

October 8, 2010
From the Office of the Castle Herald
Lady Tatiana Moskovskaia
castle@outlandsheralds.org

Unto the Outlands College of Heralds, our respected friends and colleagues who give freely of their time to provide commentary, and all others who come by these letters, on this 8th day of October,  A.S. XLV (2010 CE), does Lady Tatiana Moskovskaia send greetings on behalf of Sheik Omar Mohammud Mirzazadeh, White Stag Principal Herald.

It would assist Castle Herald greatly in the future if you would e-mail a copy of the documentation summary for name submissions along with the paper copies;  It saves having to re-type everything again.  Also, please be sure that you include dates of registration and return for armory for previously registered names and resubmissions of any kind.  If Castle can't find where an item was returned, it may be pended until the information is provided or payment is made for a new submission.

Here follows the Kingdom of the Outlands Letter of Presentation for October 2010. Your comments and suggestions are always welcome. Errors found herein are my sole responsibility.  Anyone may comment upon the items found below, and e-mail commentary to the herald's commentary list is encouraged. Please have comments to Rampart Herald by November 16, 2010, for the decision meeting tentatively scheduled for November 17, 2010.  As a reminder, the College of Arms requests commentary on all items, including appeals.

1. Ingvarr Halvarson - Device resubmission (Laurel). Gyronny gules and Or, three ravens reguardant in pall, heads to center.
(Hawks Hollow) Submitter's name was registered on July 2005 LoAR via Outlands,
http://heraldry.sca.org/heraldry/loar/2005/07/05-07lar.html

Submitter's previous device Gyronny arrondi gules and Or, a raven reguardant sable, was returned on the same LoAR for the following reasons: Conflict with Serlo of Litchfield, Gyronny gules and Or, a vulture close sable. There are no difference between these two devices since there is no difference between a vulture and a raven: "Until such time as it can be demonstrated that there is 'some visual difference' between a vulture and a raven when used in heraldry, no difference will be given between these charges. [Brand Björnsson, 11/02, R-Meridies]". The position of the bird's head is not worth a difference, nor is there a difference between gyronny and gyronny arrondi. As discussed in the Cover Letter, this is a valid depiction of gyronny arrondi, though the use of a central charge with this depiction of gyronny arrondi (with the corners of the shield in the center of a gyron rather than having the line of division issue from the corner) is one step from period practice. Please advise the submitter that the arrondi should be slightly more pronounced.

2. Rand the Tracker of Oak Hollow - Device resubmission (Kingdom). Sable, a mounted archer courant to sinister, maintaining a bow and arrow to dexter argent. Change of Device passed on September 1995 LoAR as Per pall sable goutty d'eau, Or, and vert, a stag at gaze sable and a drawn bow nocked of an arrow Or, http://heraldry.sca.org/heraldry/loar/1995/09/lar.html

(Hawks Hollow) Submitter's name was registered on June 1992 LoAR, via Outlands, http://heraldry.sca.org/heraldry/loar/1992/06/lar.html

Submitter's previous device Sable, a mounted archer courant to sinister, maintaining a drawn bow and arrow to dexter argent,

was returned on December 2005 LoR for the following reasons: Submitting Herald writes: Please change the blazon as needed to match the picture. The client very much wants the horse's legs to be under the body. Commenters indicate that to the best of their knowledge the posture of the horse is not blazonable. Courant requires the horse's legs to be outstretched, statant requires all four feet on the ground, and passant allows for only one foot to be off the ground. The Outlands College of Heralds cannot produce a blazon for this posture, as it does not appear be used in heraldry. Because no blazon can be defined for this posture, the device could not be reproduced from said non-existent blazon, resulting in a violation of Rfs VII.7. This can also be viewed as a violation of Rfs VIII.4.c which prohibits the use of animate objects in unheraldic postures.
Device returned for redraw.

3. Readstan, canton of - Badge resubmission (Kingdom). (Fieldless) A griffin's head erased contourny argent, collared gules.

Branch name was registered on March 2007 LoAR, via Outlands http://heraldry.sca.org/heraldry/loar/2007/03/07-03lar.html. The previous badge was submitted on July 2010 LoP http://rampart.outlandsheralds.org/2010-07-lop/1007-lop.html and is expected to be returned for conflict: This appears to be identical to the badge of Beautrice Hammeltoune, reg. 11/98 via AEthelmearc:(Fieldless) A griffin's head erased argent collared gules.

Thus ends the October 2010 Letter of Presentation.
