Unto Marie de Blois, White Stag Principal Herald and the Outlands College of Heralds, does Æðeluulf munuc, Rampart Herald, send well wishes this day. I write you concerning the May Letter of Response for the Kingdom of the Outlands.

I wish to thank the following people for assisting on commentary for this letter, being: Gawain of Miskbridge, Green Anchor and the Calontir commentary group.

The following items have been sent to Laurel for final determination:

  1. Hawk's Hollow, Canton of. New Household Name. House of the Hooded Hawk. This name is to be associated with the Canton's badge Or, a hooded hawk's head erased gules, hooded sable.
  2. Loghlan de Hay. New Name and Device. Argent, on a fess azure between three escutcheons gules, a wolf's head erased sinister argent. Name Changed at Kindom from "Lochlan de Hay" for temporal compatiblity (requested spellings were 200+ years apart, modernised the given name to fit the 'de Hay' surname per client's wishes)
  3. Mary Blakthorn. New Change of Name and Device. Purpure, a dragonfly between flaunches argent and in base two annulets in fess Or. The original name Mary of Blackthorn is to be retained.
  4. Siguršr Hįkonarson. New Device. Gules, a bend beveled sinister between a Thor's hammer and an anvil Or.
  5. Tyrfingr von Wolfsberg. New Badge. Gules, a hawk volant to sinister, wings addorsed, talons extended, and a bordure engrailed Or. To be co-Owned by Gwenhevare of Coventry.

The following items were returned for rework:

  1. Gwenhevare of Coventry. New Household Name. House of the Hawks Flight.
I was unable to find any documentation for an Inn-sign style of household name that would support the name construction [noun]'s [verb]. As names derived from Inn signs were heraldry in and of themselves, a formation of "Flying Hawk" might be registrable, but changing the order of elements is a Major Change, and this has been disallowed by the client. Therefore this must be returned for rework.
  2. Hawk's Hollow, Canton of. New Household Name. House of the Hawk's Plummage.
I was unable to find any documentation for an Inn-sign-style of household name that would support the name construction [Hawk's Plumage]. Per precedent, most of the single-noun inn signs were [adjective][noun]. Additionally, names derived from Inn signs were heraldic in origin, and I wasn't able to find a charge that would indicate "hawks feather" that could be definately be identified as a Hawk's. Return for rework.
  3. Hawk's Hollow, Canton of. New Household Name. House of the Hawk's Talon.
I had trouble blazoning the inn sign for this household name, as just the [noun]'s [noun] style construction from the previous sunmission has the same general issue. Return for rework.
  4. Serena di Sancto Andrea. New Name and Device. Per bend azure and Or, in bend three arrows inverted argent and an oak tree eradicated sable.

  5. It was Rampart's opinion that the name was either Presumptive ("Daughter of Saint Andrew") or an undocumented locative ("of San Andreas").

This ends the May Letter of Response, dated this Twenty-First day of May in the year of grace Two Thousand and Eight, being the forty-third year of the Society, and the celebration Saint Godric of Finchale. I remain in service to Crown and Laurel Sovereign.
