UNTO the Outlands College of Heralds, our respected friends and colleagues who give freely of their time to provide commentary, and all others who come by these letters, on this 6th day of April A.S. xxxxii (2008 CE), does Maestra Francesca di Pavia send greetings on behalf of The Honourable Lady Marie de Blois, White Stag Principal Herald.

Here follows the Kingdom of the Outlands Letter of Presentation for April 2008. Your comments and suggestions are always welcome. Errors found herein are undoubtedly mine.

Anyone may comment upon the items found herein, and e-mail commentary to the herald's commentary list is encouraged. Please have comments on items contained herein to Rampart H erald by May 10, 2008, for the decision meeting tentatively scheduled for May 11, 2008.

By the time of the next Letter of Presentation due date, my warrant will have expired. It is still my intent to leave this office at that time. Helloooo??? Anybody out there???? Anyone? Bueller?

1. Gwenhevare of Coventry. Household name for House of the Hawks Flight.
(Hawk's Hollow) It is requested that this household name be associated with a badge co-owned by the submitter and submitted on this Letter (see item #9). No major changes accepted.
The submitter's name was registered in September 1998. From the submitter and consulting herald: "This household name is formed as per an inn's name, which in turn referred to its livery or signboard. In this case the signboard would be that of a hawk in flight. This name formation type was published on sca.org from the June 1992 Precedents of Bruce Draconarius of Mistholme. The words "hawk" and "flight" were both used in period: http:\\www.dictionary.com/: "Hawk: any of numerous birds of prey of the family Accipitridae, having a short, hooked beak, broad wings, and curved talons, often seen circling or swooping at low altitudes [Origin: bef. 900; ME hauk(e), OE hafoc; c. 2. Hawk's Hollow, Canton of. Household name for House of the Hawk's Plummage.
(Hawk's Hollow) Per the SCA website, the canton is creating a household. Changes accepted.

The name is constructed under the requirements set forth is RfS III.2.b.iv. (Household Names): "Household names must follow the patterns of period names of organized groups of people. Possible models include Scottish clans (Clan Domhnaill), ruling dynasties (House of Anjou), professional guilds (Bakers Guild of Augsburg, Worshipful Company of Coopers), military units (The White Company), and inns (House of the White Hart)." This household name follows the inn name pattern.
A badge, "Or, in fess three feathers palewise gules" is to be associated with this household name. The badge was registered to the Canton of Hawk's Hollow in May 2007.

3. Hawk's Hollow, Canton of. Household name for House of the Hawk's Talon.
(Hawk's Hollow) Per the SCA website, the canton is creating a household. Changes accepted.

A badge, "Or, a hooded hawk's head erased gules, hooded sable" is to be associated with this household name. The badge was registered to the Canton of Hawk's Hollow in July 2007.

5. Lohlan de Hay. Name and device resubmission. Argent, on a fess azure between three escutcheons gules, a wolf's head erased sinister argent.
(Caerthe) Gender: Male. The submitter cares most about the language/culture of the name, and requests an authentic 14th Century Scots name which includes the surname "Hay". No major changes accepted.
Lohlan: Black, The Surnames of Scotland, p.410. header LACHLAN - name in this spelling is dated to the 12th century.
de Hay: Black, The Surnames of Scotland, p.350. header HAY - de Hay is dated to the early 14th century.

6. Mary Blackthorn. New device. Purpure, a dragonfly between flaunches argent and in base two annulets in fess Or.

The name was registered in December 1998 as Mary of Blackthorn.

7. Serena di Sancto Andrea. New name and device. Per bend azure and Or, in bend three arrows inverted argent and an oak tree eradicated sable.
(Drygestan) Gender: Female. No major changes accepted. Submitter does not consider correcting byname for gender to be a major change.
Serena: Italian Renaissance Women's Names, Rhian Lyth of Blackmoor Vale, as being from 14^th-15^th C Italy. (sca.org/heraldry)
de Sancto Andrea: Masculine Names from Thirteenth Century Pisa, Juliana de Luna, as being from 13^th C Pisa. (sca.org/heraldry) The feminine form for the word “of” is “di”.
[Actually, as I understand it..."di" is the Italian patronymic form; "da" (sometimes "de") is the locative form. My name, Francesca di Pavia, is actually incorrect. It should be da Pavia. Oh well...I've had it all these years...... -Castle]

8. Sigurđr Háákonarson. Device resubmission. Gules, a bend beveled sinister between a Thor's hammer and an anvil Or.
(Readstan/Caerthe)
The name was registered in May 2006.

9. Tyrfingr von Wolfsberg. Badge for House of the Hawk's Flight. Gules, a hawk volant to sinister, wings addorsed, talons extended, and a bordure engrailed Or.
(Hawk's Hollow) The household name is submitted as item #1 on this Letter.
The submitter's name was registered in August 2003.
