On Thursday, July 25 2002, a Rampart meeting was held to review the June 2002 Letter of Presentation. In attendance were Countess Anne Aliz de Bâle, Fretty Herald, Earl Cathyn Fitzgerald, and Lady Alia Marie de Blois. Letters of comment were received from Shayk Da'ud ibn Auda al-Jamal Herald; Lady Sorcha MacLeod Aspen Pursuivant, who was assisted by her husband Lord Roderick Conall MacLeod; Colm Dubh Black Dove Pursuivant; Lady Athenais Bryennissa, Black Pillar Pursuivant; Lady Genevieve la flechiere Bucina herald. Here are the decisions from these deliberations:

  1. Anne Aliz de Bâle. New Badge. (Fieldless) On a cinquefoil azure five fleurs-de-lys bases to center argent.

  2. al-Barran, Barony of Her name was registered in December of 1997 via the Outlands. If this badge is registered she would like her old badge registered in May of 1999 via the Outlands, "(Fieldless) On a cinquefoil Or five fleurs-de-lys bases to center purpure." to be released. [al-Jamal] - (Badge): "I suspect that in period, something like this would have been blazoned *A cinquefoil azure semy-de-lis argent*, based on some of the depictions found in early armory of *a cinquefoil ermine*. But this is the SCA, and we probably need to specify the number and orientation of the fleurs."
[Aspen] - (Badge): "No conflicts found."
[Black Pillar] - (Badge): "This looks clear of conflict."
[Bucina] - (Badge): "No obvious conflicts with other cinquefoils."

    ACTION: Badge Passed.

  3. Anne Aliz de Bâle. New Badge. (Fieldless) A swan naiant argent semy-de-lys azure.

  4. al-Barran, Barony of
[Aspen] - (Badge): "Lovely badge! No conflicts found."
[Black Pillar] - (Badge): "This looks clear of conflict."
[Bucina] - (Badge): "No obvious conflicts with other swans naiant."

    ACTION: Badge Passed.

  5. Jeanne-Marie Dubois. New Device. Erminois, a chevron azure between three roses proper.

  6. Caer Galen Her name is currently in submission on the March 2002 Outlands Letter of Intent. It will be reviewed by Laurel in July, before this device passes kingdom. The hyphen will likely be dropped from the name. [Aspen] - (Device): "No conflicts found."
[Black Pillar] - (Device): "This looks clear of conflict."
[Bucina] - (Device): "No obvious conflicts in chevron-complex-plain-azure. No obvious conflicts in chevron-complex-charged-azure. Closest matches in chevron-plain-uncharged-azure: * Gottfried von Beringen May of 1982 (via the Middle): Or, a chevron azure between a key fesswise, a quill bendwise sinister, and a tower gules. 1 CD for change of field tincture (or to erminois) 1 CD for change of secondary charges. * Ceanntighern Macgillechallum October of 1999 (via the Middle): Or, a chevron azure between two thistles and a castle gules. 1 CD for change of field tincture (or to erminois) 1 CD for change of secondary charges. * Isabeau de Bordeaux December of 1989 (via the East): Or, a chevron azure, masoned Or, between three roses azure. 1 CD for change of field tincture (or to erminois) 1 CD for change of tincture of secondary charges. Closest matches in chevron-plain-charged-azure: * Axel of An Dun Theine December of 2001 (via Meridies): Or, on a chevron azure between three fox's masks gules a double-arched bridge Or. 1 CD for change of field tincture (or to erminois) 1 CD for change of of secondary charges 1 CD for addition of tertiary charges (plates)."

    ACTION: Device Passed.

  7. Mara Fae. New Name and Device. Per chevron ployé sable and gules, a chevron ployé between a butterfly and a cloud issuant from base Or charged with a compass rose sable.

  8. "Mara" is the client's legal name. A copy of her birth certificate was provided. As documentation for "Fae", the client provides photocopies from The Gypsies by Angus Fraser, Blackwell Publishers Ltd, 1992, page 114. "When Paul Fa or Faa was given 15 days to get out in 1537, it was because he was accused of having murdered another Gypsy. The is the first occurence of the name Faa or Faw, which was to become very familiar in Scotland: that Gypsy Faas were already known there is shown by the fact that when, in 1539, a George Fae and Michael Meche were examined by the Sheriff of Staffordshire, they were found to possess a variety of letters, including one from the King of Scots and a bill from the Abbot of Holyrood." In Black, Surnames of Scotland, page 250 under the heading Faa, Faw, Fall he writes "Three spellings of one name. Faa is or was a common surname among the Border gypsies (Groome, Gazetteer, I, p. 408), and Faw was the spelling of their name in Shetland (MCM., II, p. 164). Dr. Fae or Falle was principal of Glasgow University in latter quarter of seventeenth century (RPC., 3. ser. XII, p. 522)." That is past our gray area of 1650, but hopefully the client's documentation will be found acceptable to date it to 1539 even though the author does not say what reference he used for that information. [Black Dove] - (Name): "If Mara Fae wishes to be a Gypsy, she has enough; if not, consider the Irish Gaelic "de Fae" found in Woulfe, p. 437."
[Black Pillar] - (Name): "As long as the submitter isn't interested in an authentic name, this should probably be registerable."
[Bucina] - (Name): "12 previous registrations of Mara, most recent one in March 2001 with no comment. No obvious conflicts."
[al-Jamal] - (Device): "RfS VII.7.a. requires that "Elements must be recognizable solely from their appearance." It is impossible to tell what the charge in base is without recourse to the blazon; it looks neither like the period heraldic *cloud* (*see*, *e.g.*, the *Pictorial Dictionary*, 2nd ed., #128; the Rules for Submission require that charges be drawn in their period forms, and the "cotton candy" form of cloud is modern), nor quite like a *mountain* (which is more angular than the charge here), nor either a *mount* or *trimount* (being too "bumpy" for either)."
[Aspen] - (Device): "We get a complexity count of seven - within the rule of thumb. We *would* like to see the butterfly look more like a butterfly, though. This appears to be a case of the artist trying so hard to "fill the space" that the identifiability of the charge has been compromised. No conflicts found."
[Black Pillar] - (Device): "The cloud on the device is not recognizable as such, bearing no resemblance at all to a period cloud. If she wants something issuant from base, she's better off going with a mountain, which according to the PicDic (s.n. MOUNT, MOUNTAIN, #511) looks remarkably similar to what she's drawn. This should be returned for a redraw."
[Bucina] - (Device): "Possible conflict with Mariposa de los Montoyas August of 1979: Per chevron sable and gules, a chevron between three butterflies Or, wings voided. 1 CD for change of secondary charge group (3 butterflies vs. 1 butterfly + mount + compass star) No obvious conflict with chevron-Or-plain-charged. No obvious conflict with chevron-Or-complex-uncharged. No obvious conflict with chevron-complex-charged. No relevant butterfly precedents."
[Black Pillar] - (Device): In response to Bucina: "The compass star is a tertiary charge, not a secondary, as it is entirely on a charge that lies directly on the field. Therefore there is one CD against Mariposa's device for changing the type(s) of the secondary charge group (RfS X.4.e), another for removing the tertiary charge (RfS X.4.i), and a probable third for the tincture change on the butterflies: The blazon indicates that the wings are a gold outline through which the field shows, therefore changing the tincture of more than half of the charge (RfS X.4.d)."

ACTION: Name Passed. Device Passed for a Laurel call regarding the funky cloud thing.

  9. Pendar the Bard. Change of registered Device. Per chevron ployé Or and azure, a demi-fleur issuant from the line of division azure.

  10. His name and device were registered in July of 1998 via the Outlands. His current device, "Azure, a musimon rampant argent armed, on a chief triangular Or a lyre sable." is to be released if this new device is registered. [Aspen] - (Device): "Nice device! The demi-fleur seems to be touching the top of the escutcheon on my screen, is this a blazonable detail, or is it not as close as it appears? No conflicts found."
[Black Pillar] - (Device): "This looks similar to some Continental armoury I've seen on rolls of arms. This looks clear of conflict. Nice armoury. :)"
[Bucina] - (Device): "There are many 'per chevron Or and azure...' registrations. All of them add secondary charges, so the change of line of partition plus the secondary charge group clear them. No obvious conflicts. I think this is a really elegant device. Do you have period examples of this line of division? A fellow member of my household bears (unregistered) 'Per chevron argent and azure, a demi-fleur issuant from the line of division azure, in base an estoile.' I've always liked it."

    ACTION: Device Passed.
